Gainey was much like Shero, agressive and not afraid to take chances(Gomez Lecavalier Sundin etc) and win now.
I disagree with that, actually. I think Gainey was actually the opposite of that before the spring of 2009. This is not a defense of Gainey or anything either, but I think his moves in 2009 were definitely out of character. Prior to that Gainey was very very conservative. For a few years we made very small moves and very small signings. It was his original goal to build the team from within. But even at that he was too conservative because we missed several opportunitite to deal players to acquire picks. In 2009, he did a complete 180 and became very trigger happy. I think at that point he was probably under a lot of pressure because of the centennial collapse. So, I think with Gainey it was a tale of two extremes. But the aggresive extreme was out of character with most of his tenure.
Bah. Between sports arena that boost the economy of a city and enhance the value of entire neighborhoods vs crap fringe hipster governement funded movies that 18 people watch I think the arenas are more useful.
People should stop mentioning Bickell's name for us....he will either re-signed or go elsewhere. No way are we in a position to overpay.
Unless Bergevin really thinks he is a legit top 6 winger on a contender and can put up 25 goals and 50 points year in and year out, I don't see him paying the 4.5 mil cap hit(+-0.3 mil) he will cost.
If you sign a guy like that 4 years at 18 mil and he's on your 3rd line putting up 30-35 points a year you screwed up your salary scale. When Gallagher wants a new deal playing on the 1st or 2nd line, pretty hard to tell him you're only offering 2 years and 6 mil on a "bridge" contract and he wants 5-6 years at 5 mil per year.
