For a few years we made very small moves and very small signings. It was his original goal to build the team from within. But even at that he was too conservative because we missed several opportunitite to deal players to acquire picks. In 2009, he did a complete 180 and became very trigger happy. I think at that point he was probably under a lot of pressure because of the centennial collapse. So, I think with Gainey it was a tale of two extremes. But the aggresive extreme was out of character with most of his tenure.
Like Shero he got agressive when he saw a window to contend, plus the centennial also was part of it. He also did it in Dallas with the Niewendyk deal that cost Iginla but help them win a cup.

I doubt the hotels and restaurants of the Quebec area will get together and build an arena. They pay huge taxes(on payroll, profits plus collect GST and provincial tax) for the different levels of government to look after their interests.

well, since they're the ones who'll get all the money from this, let them get extra taxed to fund their arena

personally, I'm paying enough taxes as it is.

That's often how it's funded with an "entertainment tax" on different activities like concerts, sporting events etc.

Also, part of your taxes goes to the government trying to stimulate economic activity with grants, interest free looans and loan guarantees on a regular basis, the fact that it's a sporting venue or sports team is no different than building a warehouse, factory or tourist attctaction, it generates salaries, taxes and economic activity. I doubt the City of Pittsburgh and the county regrets investing in their new areana.

I am all for government subsidies of sports franchises as long as government gets a share of resultant profits. For example, they could own the arena.

To support the idea that the government should front the costs for arenas and stadiums subsequently owned by private interests like Jeffrey Loria is to support a phenomenon known as "corruption".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption

In philosophical, theological, or moral discussions, corruption is spiritual or moral impurity or deviation from an ideal. Corruption may include many activities including bribery and embezzlement. Government, or 'political', corruption occurs when an office-holder or other governmental employee acts in an official capacity for his or her own personal gain.

Well thank you all the habs ''fans'' that did answer to my question about the return of the Diques!
I may be the strongest anti-habs in Quebec, but I have to congrats you for this good year. From botton to the top.

BUT this will not happen next year.
Peace

lol

Corruption is a natural consequence of any monetary system and especially one that is based on fractional reserves, as giving value to something that has no intrinsic value to begin with will inevitably lead to most forms of power-based corruption... what was once known as profiteering.

Simply supporting to continue managing human life through any form of money-based economy is to support, not a phenomenon, but a direct consequence of the system itself, what is known as corruption.

I have read otherwise. If the city of Quebec gets some of the profit from the arena than all will be okay. In all likelihood, it is private gain at the cost of the public. You can do a lot of public good with two hundred million dollars but corporate welfare will win over in the end.

I was not aiming for that level of depth :-)

The fact corruption is a nearly universal phenomenon does not mean we should condone or ignore it. Though it is true that all capitalist societies have corruption, it is not true that the magnitude of corruption is equally severe. Some have less than others. Given that we are in this system, we should try and reduce where we can.

For me, that includes opposing public subsidies of privately owned arenas.

I pay taxes for projects, roads, hospitals and various stuff in Montreal, were I usually set foot once or twice a year at most. We live in the same province and the same country, don't expect every penny you pay to the government benefit you personally.

The restaurants, hotels ect. will get extra taxed anyways if the arena is beneficial for them since they will generate extra revenue.

Your theories are great - and most know them by the way, but I live in the real world where what is being done for me and other tax payers could be labeled as not much (at best)

I don't think what happened in the summer of 2009 was spurred on by seeing a window to contend. It was more of a panic reaction. We changed a good deal of the team there. It was more like mini-blowup. We were supposed to contend the season before (albeit he did add Tanguay, Lang and Laraques in the summer of 08).

And Gainey did get the right to talk to Sundin.

However, that team fell apart. Injuries all around.

Bruins are the best team when they smell blood. But surely one of the worst when they're sleeping. They were sleeping during the 1st series....they are now smelling blood.
