Leafs offseason improvements

undeniably, as a whole the last decade has been a failure for the leafs.

yes, the team is moving in the right direction and must continue to do so in order to gain respectability back, and with that in mind, here are the moves they should make ahead of next season in order

and yes i know this is all a pipe dream ... but one can dream

1.

obviously tough to judge rfa numbers on many of these contracts so im just ball parking these for cap sake

own team ufa/rfa signings and promotions:

rfa
Kadri - 2.5 / year
Komarov - 1.25 / year
Gunnarsson - 2.5 / year
Franson - 2 / year
Colborne - 1 / year

ufa
O'Byrne - 1.5 / year
Bozak - 3.75 / year
Orr - 850k / year

promote:
Ashton

2.

move up to 3rd overall to take Drouin, or if not then Mackinnon (but Drouin would be the goal)

Toronto gets:
1st round - 3rd overall
Brewer

Tampa gets:
21st overall
3rd round pick - Tampa's choice 2013 or 2014
Reilly

3.

Trade Kulemin

Pittsburgh gets
Kulemin

Toronto gets
2013 3rd round pick
2014 conditional 3rd round pick if penguins make conference finals if not then 4th round
Eric Hartzell - goalie prospect

4.

Trade Gunnarsson

Columbus gets:
Gunnarsson
D'Amigo - ahler/prospect/depth player

Toronto gets:
LA's 1st rounder - 26-30 overall

5.

League ufas

David Clarkson - 4.25 / year
Mark Eaton - 1 / year

final roster

Van Riemsdyk - Bozak - Kessel
Lupul - Kadri - Clarkson
Ashton - Grabovski - Frattin
Komarov - McClement - Orr
Colborne

Phaneuf - Gardiner
Brewer - Cody Franson
Liles - O'Byrne
Eaton

Reimer
Scrivens

leaves just about 200k in cap space if i used capgeek.com correctly!

with drouin in pipeline and adding a late first + goalie prospect

Every one of those rfa signings are way too low, losing kulemin and picking up clarkson is a downgrade, adding brewer doesnt do much, and no chance at drouin

this makes the leafs slightly worse overall not better

Leafs have made the same error the Canucks made, they replaced Burke with Burke 2.0. Improvements? Possibly, but the power unit was removed from this management team and it will show.

Toward the Drouin trade, I'm not sure if Tampa would be willing to do it but I will say Rielly would probably be the second best dman in this years draft outside Jones and Tampa does need some pretty serious help on defensive and their offense was still one of the top in the league. Would they rather have Drouin or Rielly, I don't know. And they could still get a lesser forward prospect with the Leafs pick if they were still wanting to do that, and with such a deep draft it is entirely possible to get a late 1st gem in here and have them in the NHL in 2-3 years.

I'd think you could get something better/more for Kulemin. And there is no way that Kulemin is better than Clarkson so to think that is a downgrade is just silly. These trades in no way make the Leafs worse.

Compared to everything else we see on hfboards trade section I'd say this is one of the better plans I've seen that actually have some type of realistic goals in mind.

I agree with everything you said.

Except I wouldn't trade Gunnarson for a late first. We need him.

Are you kidding me? Clarkson is not better at one single aspect of hockey besides maybe fighting. the guy flat out sucks.

Aforementioned, the RFA's signings are extremely low balled. I really do not like the idea of trading Gunner for a late first. We would only hope that player could out to be as good as him, so no point. I would assume a solid 2nd pairing defenseman holds more value than a late first. I also think we should keep Kulemin as a third liner and PK specialist. Furthermore, I do not think we should trade Rielly atm. He could become something special. As already mentioned, I have seen much, much worse proposals than this one. At least you did not completely rip off other teams.

The only move the Leafs need to make is to sign a high quality top 4 defensive defenceman.

All of these other proposals are either ridiculous, unrealistic, or unnecessary.

I hate the Kulemin Trade - bizzare value.

Maybe the Rielly and our first to move into the top 3 - not sure if Tampa would do it - other than that this is all very silly!

The defensive pairings are terrible.

Gards plays on the left, not the right. Your suggestion of pairing Dion and Gards is terrible because it's obvious to everyone that Dion needs a veteran, stay-at-home RHD to play with.

Brewer sucks as does ROB... and where is Fraser? The guy played very well on our bottom pairing last year and now he's magically removed from the roster? His physicality will be missed.

I think my favourite part of the OP was the idea of trading for Drouin... this team needs a center, not a wing. Why trade our BEST prospect and our 2013 1st round pick for a guy who doesn't solve a need?

Trade Kulemin for 2 late picks and a goalie prospect?

And then trade our #2 D-man for a late first?

Are you on Crack?

Kulemin and Gunnar are extremely important pieces of this team, you don't know how important hey are because you don't look at stats. They face extremely tough competition and play hard minutes.

For example,

Kulemin leads all NHL FORWARDS in Quality of Competition faced

Gunnarsson is 2nd to all Leafs D-men in Quality of Competition faced

And you want to trade them for picks, give your head a shake.

While getting the 3rd overall pick does sound great on paper I don't see why Toronto needs to give up Morgan Rielly, so because of him I say no deal.

I really couldn't see Tampa ever accepting a deal with Toronto that didn't involve Rielly if it was sending out their 3rd overall tbh.
Hedman - Rielly
Carle - Koekkoek
That'd be a pretty solid top 4 for many years.

Wow, that is kinda funny. Islanders are trying to get rid of the dead weight of 24 million, by adding a prospect or 2 to Dipietro and You think that giving the Islanders 30-35 million in salary for Grabovski and Liles (2 buyout candidates) is gonna make that happen Leaf fans LOL

Lol, if Clarkson leaves New Jersey he'll be getting a hell of a lot more than $4M or $4.25M. The Devils match that in a second.

He's only leaving Jersey if he gets ridiculous term (7+ years) with ******** money ($5.5M+).
