I don't see how he is any improvement over Pyatt. Pyatt is bigger, scores more points, and is a better possession player.

We are stuck with Taylor, why sign Nyström on top?

Trade Pyatt, sign Nystrom who can drop the gloves, is the far superior skater and is a VERY good PKer.

Honestly I'd rather give Zuccarello more ES minutes than Callahan at this point.

It is a much bigger issue that we are once again relying on Kreider being able to handle a top-6 role.
The problem is, his NHL career is so fragmented that I can't predict what he can be. Definitely agree that hoping Kreider can crack the top 6 (again) is concerning.

Trade him where? Who wants him? Is there a team out there that's willing to pay him 1.55 mil for 1 year? Maybe there is, but maybe there's not.

Nah, it's time to be smarter.

work the process.
Depth only wins if it's quality depth.

Stepan and McD are the Rangers' #1 Center and #1 Dman but neither are #1 on the depth chart of a lot of other teams. I think Stepan will continue to develop, but I don't see him ever reaching Malkin's level of production. As for McD, I don't see him ever scoring enough to be a true #1 Dman. That doesn't mean I want to trade either but for Malkin - yes. There's very few other players I would move those two for.

Fallacy.
Short term imbalance, yes. Inconvenient, yes.

But long term, better to have most/best assets.
That means trading vets while their value is highest before, and hopefully prospects later after their is enough demonstrated to justify their value also commands some premium.

But just keeping who we have and standing still while everybody grows old is not gonna work.

If you go down that road, only relief is if suddenly a large number of prospects all blossom all at once.

That's unreasonable to expect, even from Gordie Clark,

Stallberg will also command more, but may be worth it on a short term deal. He's RW, but do I remember he shoots L?

If so, possible use at LW?

Key is to convince him to take ONE year at a little over what he would want on a multi. The rationale is he is auditioning on a good team.
If he puts up great numbers that means the current season was not an illusion.
Then if he goes for REALLY serious bucks, he'll be likelier to get it.

The difference is that this offseason there isnt much competition because there are few UFAs. In 2014, the chance he gets paid as much as this offseason is much less.

I highly doubt he takes a discount this offseason

I have a similar feeling and it's why I'm leaning towards keeping Richards THIS off season.

Exactly. They need enough horses to win, and they don't have enough/quality proverbial horses.

That is why any thought about making 'the core' gel must be subordinate to first getting a core worth gelling.

Fine w/me.

Gonchar always sucked. Pit improved defensively once he went buh bye.
And he certainly is NOT worth the $$$.

if Iggy came here on a Shanahan type 2 year deal id do that at 4.0 per year, but i doubt he takes that type of deal.

Was that losing Gonchar? Or was that bringing in Zbynek Michalek? Incidentally, the Penguins D has been awful since they traded him.

Though I do think we'd have the best chance of retaining him after a trade. I've read/heard somewhere that Malkin loves NY and his favorite road arena is MSG.
There is obviously a two tier price structure for Malkin, one if he extends the other if he doesn't.
Just for the record, I see Pens dumping MAF etc to give him every reason to stay regardless of how they juggle $$ to do it. They may sense he MIGHT bolt, and want to get SOMETHING for him.

If we are not talking the obvious Malkin for Lundqvist,

I would say
Stepan + Girardi + MDZ
for
Malkin + Letang

I would add a third rounder from NY every other year for 5 times covering a 10 year period IF Malkin signs a full extension, AND was available to play for 60% of the prior 2 seasons games (average); AND is medically projected to be available for 80% of the following 2 seasons (average).

That would be too much for Pens not to seriously consider and ultimately accept, but not enough to cripple Rangers (unless, of course, only our guys got injured!).

Wouldn't be surprised to see Clowe take a 1 year deal with hopes he has a big season and than cashes in, in 12 months time.
Clowe is too slow, so please no.
And even if yes, he's not worth giving away another 2nd.

Only possible way around that is to have some other team sign him for us, then trade him to us for a 7th.

Not ethical, and not saying I'd do it, but if we were gonna do it, that would be the way.
