Suter is strong positionally but his value is as much as a puckmover as it is pure defense

Raffl appears to have signed a two-way contract with the Flyers. His team will receive a $120k buyout payment in exchange.

If there is one team we need to model ourselves as in the next three years, it's the Boston Bruins. Watching their system and their on ice personal is just a freaking treat.

It makes me really question our leadership.

Welcome to the club! This is exactly what I have been saying.
I do not think we are too many roster moves from it if GMDP could be bold and play his hand right. We have some of the pieces now.

Wilson and Budish are two to start with. If we land Barkov and he puts some weight on to his frame over time then there are your three big physical skilled players.

Wilson is 6'1 215 and no where near the intimidating force of Lucic or Horton. Jagr...meh close...
Both Budish and Barkov have to have the skins on the wall first before i say we are a few moves away of being molded like Boston. We do have the goalie, star defensemen, and depth.

We have no forward, at the moment, as good as Krejci, Bergeron, Lucic, or Seguin IMO.

That said, Horton is a UFA this summer...definitely worth an offer.

Horton and Barkov will definitely give the Preds some size..
Boston giving a clinic on how to beat teams like Pittsburgh and Chicago. Hopefully Poile/ Trotz are taking notice.

Disgruntled Penguins fan are having the leg-jerk reaction of wanting to trade Letang. Will never happen...but..

Weber-Letang
Josi-Klein

What a top 4

Quoted for truth. I am suggesting that we need to model ourselves after Boston. That is how we will compete with teams like Chicago, Pitts, Vancouver, etc.

Right now we essentially have the defensemen (almost) and the third and fourth lines are close. What we don't have, however, is the pair of true first line Centers that the B's have in Krejci and Bergeron.

It goes deeper than that though. Boston's system is seemingly more structured than ours, their passing is far superior to ours, and their sticks are far more active.

Is this a talent or coaching issue? I personally think it is both.

More a talent issue. The Preds work harder than any other NHL team but when push comes to shove the lack of talent and 3rd/4th line grinder molds shows it's ugly head

A bit OT, but I'm trying to get an idea of who the best defensive forward role players are on each team. I tried to set up some criteria to eliminate the more offensive two way guys in the league, and the young up and coming offensive guys.

Basically hoping to get mostly bottom six guys who's main role is strong defensive play, though it's ok if someone is a bit of a tweener on a 2nd line or something. Even if you don't think your team has any strong defensive forwards on the bottom lines, please mention who you think are the best of the group.
  • Player can be a pending UFA - As long as they are currently with your team
  • Player must be 23 years old (as of now) or older - To eliminate young offensive two way players like O'Reilly or Landeskog
  • Player can not have more than two 40 point seasons in the last 7 NHL seasons - To eliminate the Bergeron's and Staal's

If a few of you have time to stop by this thread and add a couple names, that'd be awesome. Try to limit it to the two best guys, but if you feel the need to add more that's fine. Thanks for any info you feel like sharing.

Yet the only 2 we have that really qualify are Halischuk and Gaustad.

I remember a few years back when Booth-Weiss-Horton was a productive 1st line for the Panthers. We could hypothetically re-unite that whole group if we really wanted to.

I think investigating whether Weiss and Horton would want to play together again is a good avenue to pursue. Horton will have lots of shiny offers on July 1, and that could be what makes ours jump out to him.

Booth would be very cheap out of Vancouver, asset wise, because of their need to dump cap. The question is whether we can afford, in dollars, to trade for him, sign Weiss, sign Horton, and fix our 2nd pair. You'd think Gill, Gaustad, and SK might both have to go.

SK traded for Mark Fayne
Smith+Gill traded to move up and take Drouin
Gaustad traded for a pick, which is then traded for Booth (or something like that)

FORWARDS
Colin Wilson ($2.000m) / Mike Fisher ($4.200m) / Patric Hornqvist ($4.250m)
David Booth ($4.250m) / Stephen Weiss ($4.500m) / Nathan Horton ($4.500m)
Jonathan Drouin ($2.000m) / David Legwand ($4.500m) / Filip Forsberg ($1.461m)
Taylor Beck ($0.887m) / Nick Spaling ($1.500m) / Gabriel Bourque ($0.775m)
Richard Clune ($0.538m) / Matt Halischuk ($1.000m)
DEFENSEMEN
Shea Weber ($7.857m) / Roman Josi ($3.500m)
Kevin Klein ($2.900m) / Mark Fayne ($1.300m)
Victor Bartley ($1.000m) / Ryan Ellis ($1.440m)
Jonathon Blum ($1.000m) /
GOALTENDERS
Pekka Rinne ($7.000m)

While talent is a big component, look at the identity difference. Boston's overall system is just tighter on the back end. Their players are more aggressive and tenacious. This isn't just in the playoffs. Here's another difference that bugs me between our club and theirs: their guys stick up for each other. We don't do that. We really have never done that. Not sure why, but it has to be more than just player personal.

I honestly believe in reinventing ourselves can't be a bad thing.

Here's the real problem. You watch every game the Predators play and know every bad play and every flaw. You watch what maybe 10 Bruin games and I'm guessing not nearly as invested in those viewings.

MacTavish has said he is trying to move Hemsky. I actually think he's worth a shot. Edmonton needs a bottom 6 center, particularly with Horcoff leaving. I'd love to trade Goose for him.

Sk for Hemsky? Sk would work on a 3rd line for EDM. Both UFA's next yr. Edm loses 2 Million in cap hit
