It's an interesting idea, and you have to imagine it's been talked about in both war rooms.

I doubt it happens because...

On one hand you have to imagine the Oilers saw the way Gardiner was JUST shy of his 11-12 form with the Leafs during the season and made some bad errors in his own zone and the Oilers are thinking "We might be able to hold out for a little bit more from the Leafs".

And on the other, you have to imagine the Leafs saw the way Gardiner looked like one of their best d-men in the playoffs and are going "We might be able to hold out for a little bit more from the Oilers."

I expect, like Bob McKenzie, that the Oilers will move their pick.

I expect Jake Gardiner will be a Maple Leaf this fall.

oilers and leaf fans playing in the same sand box. This will be fun. As an outsider the 7th is worth more than Gardiner in a deep draft.

Gardiner, JVR, and Marincin are all of similar age. They're all prospects at this point lol.

Only way I'd do this is if we already had a deal in place with Nashville to move the 7th overall+21st overall for Barkov.

Well that's just wrong... Gardiner and JVR have both shown they can dominate NHL games.

I wouldn't call JVR a prospect, he's a proven roster player and a playoff performer lol. Marincin has 0 games in the NHL. Gardiner has two seasons under his belt with valuable playoff experience in his short career.

If I was Toronto, I'd keep Gardiner.

Moving Gards for a draft pick is kinda crazy. It makes more sense if EDM would have to give up a young forward that has NHL experience in order to receive a young defense men that has NHL experience.

I love how you describe Gardiner and JVR both as potential Top pairing/Top Line wingers, but then the 7th overall is "just a prospect" and Gagner is a Weak 2nd line C...

Laughable.

From a Habs fan prospective, it could be a fair deal.

Gardiner has 87 games in the NHL.
Gagner has 414.
JVR has 244.

They're all under the age of 25.

To me, if you're 23 and under, you're still at least a bit of a prospect. When you're 24, you start hitting your prime, when you're 25 you're hitting your prime. When Zherdev was 23, he had just come off a 61 point season with CBJ and seemed to be in the NHL to stay. Things can happen.

Gardiner does not have the tools to be a top pairing guy, not anymore than Yandle is. However, for the 7th pick they have similar value. I wouldnt do the deal for the reason that the Oilers need a big 2 way center and thats whats probaly on the board.

Which tools does Gardiner lack that all top pairing guys have?

Are you saying Yandle isn't a top pairing dman? I think a lot of people would disagree that the Yandle who averaged 22+mins a night, 40+ pts, a + player in his last 3 years, and one of the top 2 defenders on a supposed very strong phoenix defense core.

Edit: Also the Yandle that was rated #10 by Hfboards among defenders in 2012.

Let's not get outta hand here with Gardiner "dominating" anything. He came a long way as the series with Boston went on but he's struggled a lot this year. He's going to be fine and will make us a better team but he's nowhere near worth the 7th overall.

Leafs want to make a move like this after making the playoffs and almost eliminating the team that is currently in the Stanley Cup Finals? Sounds like a step backwards...

Laughable.
Gagner and JVR are born two months apart and JVR has played 4 NHL seasons and been outscored by Gagner (in points and ppg pace) 4 consecutive times. Yeah his assessment was a little off.

But JVR is a Leaf now, he obviously has Crosby lite potential.

Straight up I wouldn't do it, I'd want to expand the deal:

To TOR: 7th overall, N Schultz, Paajarvi

To EDM: Gardiner, Kulemin, Frattin

He did expand the deal, lol.

TOR has like no interest in that imo.

For all of the Oil fans saying no...

Most teams drafting a D in the 1st round would be ecstatic if that player turned into Gardiner.

And besides we have 2 2nd round picks and a ton of young players.

Package both 2nds for one of Columbus' picks, the 19th preferably.

He has a good relationship with our coach and is great friends with Schultz.

We need to be better now, not later.

Ehh not too interested. Wouldn't mind it but looking forward to a potential top 4 of:

Rielly-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Franson
