I'm hoping for a 2nd or 3rd to be added by Philadelphia, but not expecting it.

I'm already having a disappointed feeling.

If anything, I actually believe the Kings would be the one's adding.

Bernier hasn't proven anything in the Playoffs yet, nor has he proved himself capable of playing 60+ games over an 82 game season.

At this point he is still just a very good backup goalie.

IMO if anyone adds its the Kings slighty. Like Bernier + 4th for Read + 6th.

But 1 for 1 is very fair.

He wasn't. Sutter just rode Quick like he rode his starting goalies in the past.

Why would PHI be adding? Read is a proven player. Bernier has yet to show he's capable of handling a starter work load

Any chance of Simmonds coming back if the Kings were to add 1 of their young dmen? Not Doughty or Voynov obviously

People on HF can never gauge real life trade value. This is a perfect example, because if this were proposed by a Philly fan, LA fans would be saying "No way we could easily get a 1st and a top level prospect for Bernier if we really wanted to." And don't take that as a stab at King's fans either because that's the way almost every team's fans are on these boards. Goalies really don't hold that much value.

It would have to be Voynov....

None of the other Kings Dmen have the value of Simmonds at this point, or even close.

Maybe if Read had 2-3 years on his contract it would be fair but how is 1 year of Read worth Bernier?

I didn't mean to imply that PHI adds anything. My thinking was more along the lines of LA adding a 3rd and PHI giving them a 6th or something. But a 1for1 seems fair to me.

Not very sheltered. Most people commenting on Bernier haven't watched him play. LA fans will tell you he's going to be a legitimate starter for a team. Awesome poise, sometimes even more than Quick. He had a great year.

And the pipe dream on Simmonds coming back to LA needs to stop. He's not. Nor would I want to give up the pieces necessary. All we want is a veteran defenseman or left wingers. Natural left wingers that have played their entire career at that position not someone who has played a couple games there.

As much as I think Bernier is overvalued on here this seems a bit low.

How?

Bobrovsky went for a 2nd, and two 4th's. And that trade was universally lauded by people on this site as a win for the Flyers (go figure).

Read is a roster player who put up almost 50 points two seasons ago.

I think this is a fair trade both teams get what they need, La gets scoring and Philly gets a good young goalie (to bad they traded Bob).

Varlmalov was traded for a 1st and 2nd, I would say Bernier's value is more in line with Varlmalov then Bobrovsky at the time of trade(although given market I don't think they get Varlmalov value for him, infact when Colorado was offering that for a goalie they should have been all over that)

I don't think Beriner is going to be as good as the Flyers hope... This is why they keep having goaltending issues, why don't they get someone more proven?

Read is REALLY underrated on these boards. I guess since he wasn't taken in the top 10 of a draft, people seem to think he's a scrub.

This is a good trade for both teams. Read is a great all situations player who can do everything well on a cheap contract for another year and Bernier is a young goalie with potential who's yet to get a prolonged look in the nhl. Both front offices should be happy with a deal like this.

Two seasons is not very proven, particularly in a very offensive system like Philadelphia.

He's also small at 5'10, and since the Kings play a very hard forechecking game, smaller players just aren't as effective and are more likely to get hurt.

Bernier hasn't had the starter's job at the NHL level, but still put up good numbers as a back-up (I know this, too, is affected by the Kings style of play), but was also a proven starter and award winning goaltender at the AHL level.

Quick's the reason he's not a starter. Bernier couldn't outplay a Conn Smythe winning goalie, and the one year he WOULD have been a starter due to Quick's injury, there was a lockout.

And don't get me wrong. I like Read. I just don't know if he would be a good fit for LA. I would be very disappointed if the Kings spent years grooming and developing Bernier just to trade him away for a journeyman forward with two years of pro-experience.
