This thread just proves how underrated Matt Read really is.

Having said that, I'd make this trade (although I'll miss Read )

Simmonds is not available unless a top pairing defenseman comes back. So, he's pretty much not available.

Jb for Read (not under rated by me) plus a 3rd in 13 is good to me. Of course Read is one of very few players that I think would walk right onto the Kings like he had always been there.

This just seems way too easy for the Flyers, but the trade does make sense.

He has one year until UFA. Im not a big Bernier fan, but at least he has control.

LA has enough tied up in several forwards already.

I would say look in your sig, but LA needs wingers... Think we add more than just Read to get Berny.

Wait for the trade, it's gonna be what a potential great starting goalie is worth. His value is still the same as last year, just less teams are in need.

I'd be perfectly fine with something like Read+3rd for Bernier.

Hmmm.. Bernier/Mason, that sounds like an awfully familiar tandem.

As a Kings fan I'd prefer Paajarvi or even Marcus Foligno. Ideally I'd like to see LA get a first rd pick this season because they seem to have a full roster already with prospects like Toffoli, Vey, Pearson and Andreoff ready to compete for full time jobs in LA

Bernier hasn't had the starter's job at the NHL level, but still put up good numbers as a back-up (I know this, too, is affected by the Kings style of play), but was also a proven starter and award winning goaltender at the AHL level.

Quick's the reason he's not a starter. Bernier couldn't outplay a Conn Smythe winning goalie, and the one year he WOULD have been a starter due to Quick's injury, there was a lockout.

And don't get me wrong. I like Read. I just don't know if he would be a good fit for LA. I would be very disappointed if the Kings spent years grooming and developing Bernier just to trade him away for a journeyman forward with two years of pro-experience.
Well said. Bernier's developed in a good organizational culture, cup winner. Those who say he's inexperienced haven't seen him play. He's a number 1 goalie. Bigger goalies might cover more surface area, but the holes are larger. Pick your poison. He stops the puck, that's what you want right?

Read's got good speed and hands but Bernier's value (a number 1 goalie) exceeds Read's (depth forward). Plus, Read's accomplished those stats in a much more wide open conference and he doesnt really fit the LA team identity or organizational need. For those who say goalies don't have value comparatively speaking, I really don't understand that rationale. Backstrom, Smith, Luongo, all very pricey, and with the cap coming down, it makes Bernier more advantageous for teams needing an upgrade in goal. (Pitt, Philly, NYI, PHX, Minn, Cal, Edm, Col ought to all be shopping.)

I would love Foglino, but I don't see Buffalo giving him up for Bernier.

Obviously you don't, you trade for Read KNOWING that you want to resign him and not just have him as a rental. Obviously Read COULD play hardball and test the UFA market but honestly, if a team TRADES for you then you know they WANT you and players really are more apt to resign with their acquiring team. LA has a lot to offer and I think Read definitely WOULD resign with them before he hits UFA.

This is just a stupid argument. By this logic the Flyers should never have traded so much for Pronger because he was just a one year rental. The truth was that they were confident they could get him to resign in Philly and THAT is the reason they felt comfortable pay the price they did to acquire him.

Good start towards reaching a deal and it makes sense for both teams but I think the Flyers would have to add a little something.

Hell, he probably played with half your team already (j/k). And yes, I think Philly adding a 3rd is more of a balanced trade (and what I proposed previously).

As a Devils fan, I hope Philly does trade Matt Read.
Will be another Patrick Sharp type deal.

Though, I think LA would want a little more than just Read.

Read & a prospct, maybe Stolarz

LA needs money to resign Voynov. Matt Read can score 20-30 goals and makes ZERO money... he's one of the best "values" in the league for his cap tag. Smart move for LA considering Bernier is rotting on the bench and they can't take back salary.

Plus, the whole... Richards, Carter, Williams, Hextall, Stevens helped LA win a Cup thing. The Kings have made out well with ex-Flyers.

Some might argue Matt Hackett is better than Bernier anyways.

Like Read, but do not want to waste a good asset like Bernier for ufa. Even if we wanted to resign Read, we would use that extra little cash to resign Brown who is more important. I think Bernier will go for picks, especially with young players ready for roster spots.

Why would LA want Read? Don't they have enough RH wingers? (Brown, Williams, Carter, Toffoli)

If this happens I wonder if Laviolette will let Bernier challenge Mason for the starting spot. It's still definitely Mason's spot if Bryzgalov gets bought out and Bernier gets traded there but Bernier is going to want to really want to challenge for a starting spot wherever he goes.

I don't see this as a bad deal at all. Pretty fair value, IMO. But LA would need to insure that Read was locked up to a long term deal, obviously. LA needs another scoring winger in the top 6. I've been impressed watching Read the last 2 years.

True but maybe a bigger deal is made. Foligno has top 6 ability that I think King, Clifford and Nolan lack. Maybe Bernier, Nolan and Martinez for Foligno and Hackett? Would give LA a young backup who IMO doesn't have Berniers upside but still good.
