Indeed. Rutherford basically took this whole thing right over her head.

Interesting little power play going on here, and I wouldn't be surprised if it continues quietly for as long as these two are in their respective organizations.

Interesting that Yow isn't going to be part of this confab.
Well, if JR poked her in the eye, I wouldn't get within arm's length either

If she'd just get with the times and wear a visor, she wouldn't have to worry about being poked in the eye.

Here is a nice summary I got from listening from 99.9 the Fan (Joe Ovies was very interested in this little spat):

--The June 1st deadline was the deadline where all NHL teams present the open dates of their arenas to the NHL. The NHL takes those dates, puts it into a computer and out comes the NHL schedule.
--At this point, if a team says "Hey, one of the days that you scheduled us for, we actually can't do.", then they are fined 100,000$.
--No one from State seems to have a reason why they need all of these dates; only that this is their "contractual right".
--Many dates from September, October, Nov. and December have been released. Still negotiating for Jan.-June.
--JR is very pissed.

Unfortunately, as it means no real headway has been made, this isn't only possible, it is fact based on Woodson's letter from May 9th linked in the original article.

From the second paragraph on page 2:

Quote:
While it creates additional difficulties for the basketball program, on an annual basis NC State intends to provide by June 1 all dates for its non-conference basketball schedule.

State responds to the Canes...

On Saturday, N.C. State released its numbers. The university said from Aug. 29 to March 8, 2014, it initially held out 91 dates of an available 192 dates for 28 events.

N.C. State said for football, 26 dates were initially held and that by Feb. 25, 2013, all but the eight dates needed to schedule home games for the 2013 season had been released. For men’s basketball, it said 29 dates were held and that by May 31 all but the 17 dates had been released -- 13 needed for nine basketball games scheduled for the 2013-204 season, and four dates needed to complete the schedule and cover the university’s winter commencement.

For its ACC basketball schedule, which has yet to be released, N.C. State is holding 40 dates.

_____

The university said Gale Force in past years has contacted ACC officials to ask that certain dates be withheld for hockey games. The university said it first became aware of that contact within the past year, and that N.C. State requested the ACC have contact only with university officials.

“All of us were surprised that Gale Force had been working directly with the ACC to change our basketball schedule,” Woodson said.

Here's the take away:

State actually held back 11 fewer dates than last year and had released all but 40 by May 31. Once the ACC basketball schedule is released (usually around Sept. 1) the unused dates will be immediately released.

GFH has been going behind State's back to the ACC office to reserve dates for hockey. The only change in the scheduling process from years past is that State has requested the ACC deal only with the university in setting up the basketball schedule.

This makes the Canes look really bad. They greatly exaggerated the number of dates being held. The practice of going to the ACC, who somehow got the impression that GFH had priority, without State's input or knowledge reeks of impropriety. I'm still a little confused as to why JR thought it was a good idea to take this public.

Thank goodness State finally bore down to clear out of Doak.

The Canes have a staff softball game scheduled that otherwise would have been pushed back.

So you've decided that one group provides one set of information and the other counters with different information so obviously the one you support less is the one that's misrepresenting the facts. Or is it just the last one who spoke? If Rutherford was off base in his original letter don't you think the rebuttal letter might have included that his numbers were off instead of just listing all the grand concessions State was making?

That's at least a possibility. I'm not discounting the fact that either of these two are sheisters and spin doctors at this point. For no one to be full of **** here the only possibility is that state released the dates in question and the memo never got to JR because Trevor Kidd needed a job so they made him JRs secretary.

Somebody's lying, or at the very least exaggerating the truth here.

If (big if) the part about Gale Force going around State to the ACC to change basketball dates is true though, that's a good recipe for souring the relationship.

Well, this just keeps getting more and more interesting.

There's a real need for both sides to get this out of the media immediately and speak directly to each other.

None of the numbers add up. And the way the articles read is a little confusing:

"The university said from Aug. 29 to March 8, 2014, it initially held out 91 dates of an available 192 dates for 28 events."

Does this mean the GRAND TOTAL of dates held by NC State was supposedly 91? Or is that for events NOT itemized in their next few sentences:

N.C. State said for football, 26 dates were initially held... [snip] For men’s basketball, it said 29 dates were held... [snip] For its ACC basketball schedule, which has yet to be released, N.C. State is holding 40 dates.

26+29+40 = 95 (not far from State's 91 claim, but not the same either)

91+40 = 131 (not far from Canes' 129 claim)

It's just not clear what's up - maybe they're talking past each other with data from the lower level staff guys. Agree they should just have lunch and figure it out. Then make a joint statement of collaboration and respect.
