Subban needs to be the captain of this team after next year when Gionta is gone so people can complain that he has no leadership qualities.

My bet is a routine long term deal from Montreal , a long career with the Habs, and the rest of the league longing for a player they will never have.

As for him getting a raise or whether the Habs should have signed him long term already, I have a feeling that the bridging contract helped make him the player that he is and the fact that the Habs have a Norris caliber player for two years (in a cap world) at $2.875M per season is a steal. When his new contract is up, Markov's $5.75M will be off the books.

I'm very happy for PK as he deserves it. He's the one who put in the effort to become this much improved player. He's the one who listened to his coaching staff by not trying to do it all himself this past season and he has improved his all-around game. Hater are going to hate and that's fine. The fact remains that Subban was one of the, possibly THE best defenseman this year.

He possibly wouldn't have had that same will to prove something had he signed the big deal right away. I still think it was the right way to go.

The bridge contract motivated Subban that little bit more to prove he is worth a franchise player contract. While the team will end up paying him a bit more per year now, it worked perfectly in my eyes.

It's all about motivation and putting players in the right place to succeed and I believe Montreal did a good job of this with Subban. He will sign an 8 year contract and if he continues to develop like he has, the dollar amount will be irrelevant.

Right here. Wonderful idea. Subban proves he's worth a good sized contract, Habs fans win.

What I want to know is where are the people who wanted a 10-12 year deal for Carey Price before the last CBA expired.

In a proven results versus potential debate, put me on the results side of the argument.

I still disagree about the bridging contract, or that it motivated him. PK is a competitor and always wants to prove something. This accolade was inevitable and with rumors swirling Letang wants a seven million extension. We will be paying out the nose for PK; 7-7.5M minimum.

I dont think so, I think he'll get the same contract as Pricer.

Why should I have to wait?
Guys just had a Norris type year, obviously he will get bigger dollars next year. If he wins the Norris, yes, I can definitely see him getting one or even two million+ more per year. Maybe it won't end up being that much, but one thing for sure it's that it's going to be more pricey than it would have.

In any event, what's done is done, what's just explaining to the other poster why people wanted him signed to a LT last year.

Taking risks and managing your players/contracts is also part of the job. Ideally, you sign up your young players to cheaper long term deals just before they prove their full worth.

I hope this is true...if it is, I'd be ecstatic (despite the salary cap implications - BERGEVIN FAIL LOL)...well deserved PK!

and so does Desharnais, and so does Price and same Gorges and Markov and so on.

Are we running a Reward's Club or are we running a team looking to win a Cup?

You know what would really cause HF to implode? If PK was a finalist again next season.

They are holding firm that the bridge contract is the only reason Subban showed up. He needed to impress to get paid for his next contract...

I will never buy that reasoning. PK has proven, to me at least, that he is a cut above the rest and will continue to improve, because HE WANTS TOO!

Need to up that thread. It was me, KrissE and a couple of other guys battling everyone else that the bridge contract was a terrible move.

Happy for PK, but we're going to now pay through the nose. Hopefully that triggers a DD trade.

I can see it now

CBC News - Ottawa: Meteorologists can't explain it, but it appears that the Ottawa river has risen 4 inches overnight. The rise began shortly before game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals began and rose steadily overnight, more at 11!
