Flyers offer our 1st and 2nd this year, if nothing else than to protect Kimo Timonen...

This is a beyond pathetic offer. Simply awful. Start with Schultz, then add. Letang would get better than the Staal return, especially if he's signed to a long deal.

I'm thinking Schultz, Klefbom, another prospect and the 7th overall pick. Any less would get shot down.

I'd toss you Bobby Ryan + 26th overall and possibly a B prospect like Andy Welinski or Mat Clark.

that is with Staal signing a long extension. if Letang does the same his value goes up.

So after all your whining and crying it comes down to .. add Klefbom.

7th, Nick Schultz, Klefbom, prospect.

for Letang with extension.

Not that Schultz, the other Schultz. So:

J Schultz, 7th overall pick, and Hartikainen

Any less gets shot down.

Letang did have one bad series against the Bruins, those were 4 hockey games. Prior to that, he was an offensive dynamite producing way over PPG and also a key part of penalty kill which was doing a very good job. Hes great 5 on 5 presence, his skating can cover some bad decisions in offensive zone. Hes physical and still young, he will do wonders when paired with solid partner (not Matt Niskanen or Mark Eaton !!!) When I see offers like Goligoski + mid 1st, I have to laugh.

Hes Norris nominee and definitely a top 10 D-man in this league. Its very tough to acquire those type of D-men in this league.

Letang >> J.Staal. We can go from there.

That may be the value but some players you just can't trade. The Oilers made a commitment to Justin and I don't think they would betray that by trading him a year later.

I think there's also the issue that the Oilers couldn't extend Letang until July 1st.. after the draft. Which would then mean we'd have to trade a player we just drafted and Pittsburgh would have to settle for whomever Edmonton picked. The time lines just don't add up.

I'd be more inclined to trade for Paul Martin and think that would work better for the Penguins too. I'm not even sure why they'd want to trade Letang as they can probably fit him in some how. Oilers could help facilitate that by grabbing Martin.

Value of un signed letang: First round pick (15-30), replacement defencemen, really good prospect
Eg: Vancouvers first, bieska, jensen

Value of signed letang: Top 15 pick, cheap young player, replacement defecemen, really good prospect
Eg. Oilers first, petry, klefbom, hartkinen

Do these seem fair?

He's a good offensive defenseman. He's defense still leaves a lot to be desired. He'd be a perfect fit in Philadelphia paired with a guy like Coburn.

Sounds fair to me. I would do it from a Vancouver POV.

the pieces aren't bad IMO but that hurts the Pens cap-wise. plus isn't Pavelski a center? i doubt that works for the Pens.

Pavelski can play C/RW. but without a doubt more effective at C.

I wouldn't trade much for a guy that spends half his time snapping his head back and flopping around on the ice to get a call.

I don't get the notion behind the fact that because we want to keep Malkin that means Letang is available?

Check the cap geek website. We have space.

if the rumors about Letang's contract demands are true, though, the Pens have some tough decisions coming up. i personally wouldn't want the Pens spending $7M+ per year on Letang. he's just not worth it. he's great, but not $7M+ great.

I wouldn't want to spend $7m either but if that's the case then we can obviously trade but I don't see him getting signed for that. There's no actually confirmation that is what he asked for and Shero is someone who is often able to get the best deal out of a contract. I seem him signing for around $5.5m at most.
