Wasn't that because of the lockout though? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying it seems like there would be some sort of restriction on bolting to another league. I feel like we would see a lot more guys, particularly Russians, going to play in the KHL if they didn't get a big contract when they are RFAs, or at least we would see a lot more threats being made in order to up the offer from the NHL team.

Think about it: Player A is a former ROY and has been excellent for his first contract. Now he is an RFA and is getting a slight increase in pay. If another NHL team makes him an offer, he can force the hand of his team or take the money and run. But if he gets an offer to play in the KHL for a ton more money, he can bolt and the original team is left with nothing. So now the NHL team has to match the KHL offer lose their young star without being compensated. I find it hard to believe the NHL owners would not include something in the CBA about this. It could wind up screwing a franchise pretty badly. I'm not sure how they could regulate it, but you have to think it was at least addressed somewhere in the CBA.

But he signed a two year deal with an out clause. IDK. I'm really not saying you are wrong, I just think its weird that the owners wouldn't address this, or in the alternative, that if there really are no restrictions, why we don't see young RFAs use other leagues to leverage more money out of their clubs. Guys like PK Subban I imagine could have gotten a bunch more to play in another league than he recently got and could have used the KHL to force Montreal's hand into more money. I think it would more likely be Russian guys doing it. Imagine Yakupov in a couple years. EDM is giving him his second contract..maybe $3.5 mil? He gets an offer from Moscow for $5 mil, tells EDM to pay or he walks and they get no compensation. At least in the context of NHL teams there will be draft picks exchanged.

He was willing to play there with his brother if he didn't get more money from the Av's.

Once your deal is up you're free to do whatever you want. Most wouldn't leave though because they still want to play in the best hockey in the world. Besides its not like every RFA coming off their ETC gets lowballed and makes peanuts. They might not have all the leverage but they still have enough to get a good deal.

There's nothing set in place because there hasn't been a noteworthy player to bolt to the KHL like that.

I guess. That is poor planning by the NHL Owners if you ask me.

Bobrovsky talking to SKA Petersberg and Columbus

Ironic if he wins the Vezina and leaves for $8M/year in the KHL.

http://www.torontosun.com/2013/06/07...eams-about-new

Quote:
Vezina Trophy-nominated goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, a restricted free agent at the end of the season, is talking contract with two teams.

Bobrovsky told Russian media outlet Sport-Express he's negotiating with the Columbus Blue Jackets and SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL. The 24-year-old didn't comment further but previous reports have said SKA is willing to throw big bucks, upwards of $8 million per season, to sign him.

Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen has already said he'd match any NHL offer for Bobrovsky, one of three nominees for the NHL's goalie of the year award. But he can't do the same for a KHL deal.

I think this going to be the norm for Russian RFA's going forward, using the KHL for leverage. I wouldn't doubt if we see one or two actually call their bluff and leave for the KHL down the road.

Funny you mention this.....you brought some deja vu. I swore a few nights ago I dreamed that Bob was being interviewed and he was very eloquent in English. It was after some big achievement...not necessarily the Vezina. It was after a game in the locker room. I hope it's not an omen and I will see that image in the coming years. I kind of hope he goes to Russia...but doubt it.

He's probably been using Rosetta Stone. That software is practically witchcraft.

So what if he leaves for the KHL? Do we save a little face and feel a little better about the trade?

In what world is a proven top 6 player with a scoring touch around the net worth a goaltender with a small sample size?

Simmonds isn't getting moved in the first place but if he was to it would cost a whole lot more than that.
