im not sure how much faith they have in their kids down in WBS or the kids they just drafted. Letang doesnt sound like ehs doing anyone any favors asking for 8 million per. So i would agree. the Pens may not have a choice but to cave in

I would absolutely love it if they locked up Letang at over $7m per.

Malkin (8.70)
Crosby (8.70)
Letang (7.60)
Neal (5.00)
Martin (5.00)
Fleury (5.00)

40.00m devoted to their roster with a cap of 64.30m.

That's 62% of their cap space devoted to 6 players.

i would imagine they would likely buyout Martin and the last year of his contract. But still thats a ton of money tied up in 5 players

I think Murray and Morrow aren't coming back. Iginla's a toss up right now.

I saw a tweet the other day saying they would shop Neal and someone else around this summer. So I guess that makes sense now if they were trying to lock up Letang.

And Malkin should get more than Crosby's AAV since his contract can't be 12 years long. He's clearly a better player than Corey Perry who just got an 8 year, $69 million deal.

I think Stevens would be a fine coach if he makes some adjustments to his coaching style. He was very embedded here (which may have made him too friendly).

I'm surprised Byfuglien can play 20+ minutes a night at that weight. I'm always surprised at how goos his top end speed is weighting that much.

Stomping his skates on the ice will really cause some ice wear. The faceoff scrum could become more interesting.

Byfuglien is literally a blue line anchor.

Yeah, the Flyers better stay far away from Big Buff.

This would be awesome. All that money tied into a d-man who isn't that good and with a couple other big contracts.

How many assets did the Pens give up, total, for this run?

Is it even known if Iginla is staying?

Looking at the Pens roster for next year and their cap situation, I really don't think the Pens can get "better" on paper than they were this year without making some substantial trades, and at that point I am not entirely sure they would be better. They have a little less than $8 million left and need to sign four players.

CAPGEEK.COM USER GENERATED ROSTER
My Custom Lineup
FORWARDS
James Neal ($5.000m) / Evgeni Malkin ($8.700m) / Beau Bennett ($0.900m)
Chris Kunitz ($3.725m) / Sidney Crosby ($8.700m) / Steve MacIntyre ($0.625m)
Jussi Jokinen ($2.100m) / Brandon Sutter ($2.067m) /
Tanner Glass ($1.100m) / Joe Vitale ($0.550m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Paul Martin ($5.000m) / Brooks Orpik ($3.750m)
Kris Letang ($3.500m) / Matt Niskanen ($2.300m)
Simon Despres ($0.840m) / Deryk Engelland ($0.567m)
GOALTENDERS
Marc-Andre Fleury ($5.000m)
Tomas Vokoun ($2.000m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $56,423,333; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (18-man roster): $7,876,667

You figure in improved play from Bennett will help and maybe someone from the system comes up and performs (Maatta, Pouliot?). But they aren't going to have a lot of money to spend so the team is going to look very similar to what it did this year. Not necessarily a bad thing because they clearly were a good team. But unless something drastic happens like trading Malkin, on paper the team is going to be on the same level as it was this year, but I don't see how they will improve the team this offseason.
