When Predictions Go Wrong (and Right)

Mea culpa time.

I really screwed up my prediction last round against the Pens. I realize I am not the only one, but it doesn’t change the fact that I got it wrong.

Of course, lots of people got it really wrong. That is the very nature of predictions. You get them wrong way more often than you get them right.

Sometimes you get them wrong for the right reasons. You didn’t know a certain player was injured, or a key guy got hurt in the first game and changed everything. Or maybe bad luck cost the better team and the fates were going to ensure that your well-researched, well-thought-out, well-intentioned prediction looked stupid in retrospect, no matter how “right” you were when you made it.

But sometimes you get predictions wrong for the wrong reasons. You didn’t do your homework. You didn’t give one team enough credit, or, more likely, you gave one team too much credit. You just saw all the shiny pieces and forgot that they still need to fit together to make the machine run.

This is where I made a mistake. This is where I got my Bruins/Penguins prediction so wrong. I looked at Pittsburgh and said, “That is a lot of fire power.”

So I am sorry. I won’t do that again. And boy was I wrong. What was my prediction?
Bruins in 5.

I’m ashamed of myself. I didn't mean to disrespect the Bruins like that.

So how about this series? Uuuungh, it seems like everyone on this board is predicting Boston in 6.

But I also think Bruins in 6, so I will go with that and hope I look as stupid as I did last series.

Oh, oh I know.

I started thinking about this post after Game 2.

Haters gonna hate, might as well enjoy it.

The way they were playing in the last month of the season(blaming Geoff Ward), I had them out in one or two rounds. I knew I was wrong during the Leafs series.

+1.

I had them squeaking past Toronto and getting killed in Round 2. Knew I was wrong after Game 1 against Toronto.

Before I made my sections for my pool, I said The Leafs would put them out in 4! Still when money was on the line I took Bruins in 6. Did I really believe the Leafs would beat them? Yes I did!

There has been 5 factors as to why the Bruins are playing tonight. In no particular order, Lucic, Krejci (when will PC ever trade him), Rask, Julien and Krug.

When purschasing tickets for Beer Fest (which was on 5/31), I had a conversation with a friend that I was going with that works for the NHL and if there was a game that night would have to be at the Garden.

My response?

There's no way they will be playing hockey in late May.

I LOVE BEING WRONG!!!!!!!!!!

On a serious note, my feelings are see-sawing about this series. At first I was confident, but the closer we get the less confident I am. I was strangely confident vs. Pittsburgh, but a lot of that was predicated on getting to their goalies, who I felt were mediocre at best. I don't love Crawford, but he's been excellent in the playoffs. He scares me a bit, not gonna lie.

Side note Mike...if my team wins two championships in 3 years, do I have to become as arrogant and entitled as Yankee and Patriots fans? If so, I'm ready!!!

At first I was like, 'wow this is really heart felt. He's doing what most refuse to do here.'

Then I was like, oh maaaan, this is trollery at its finest.

Finally, I did the right thing and just slow clapped.

8-9 French newspaper guys had Pens winning over the Bruins. I believe 2 had the Bruins out in 5.

They are supposed to be more objective than us fans but no they go on their gut feeling. Maybe they had the Bruins out against the Rangers. Now that would explain their predictions against the Pens. There were sure to win against nobody.

I believed the Bruins would win the series, but in 6 or 7.

This round I'm worried.

I was wrong early on. Had Toronto in 5.

This team limped into the playoffs and all signs pointed to another early round exit after the let them back into the series.

I am happy I was wrong.

Wouldn't it be more helpful if you took CHI, based on your track record, I mean?

I didn't think we'd beat Toronto either after the way the season ended. I will never question them again. (I will complain though)

I thought we'd sweep Toronto.

But that doesn't help my bragging.

I've picked the Rangers over the B's in five, the Pens over the B's in five, and I've got Chicago over the B's in five.

It's worked twice so far, so why stop now?

I had Bruins in 7 against Toronto (even Turned down a bet I had with my Pens buddy who said he'd only cash in on 75% of our Bruins/Pens bet there and then once goal 4 was scored. Told him no cos Bruins would win in overtime) Then picked Bruins in 5 for Rangers.

But then it all went downhill from there. I picked the Bruins in 6 against Pens. Well I'm sorry for doubting the Bruins could close it out sooner.

Now to try and get back on track I'm picking Bruins in ......................5..............No 6 so the cup can be presented in Boston, No 5.............6, I'm going with 6.
