I honestly think the timing is right to move Malkin for Pitt. They will get the maximum return with the cap going down and teams needing to unload some room for him, and he's just entering into his prime at 26.

However, I do not believe they'll move him. Shero will end up gutting his defense core and continuing to flounder in the playoffs with no goalie or defense.

Teams like Ottawa, NYI, Colorado, Dallas could afford to give Malkin the maximum that the new CBA allows

Leafs have 20 mill for 8 players. Sign Malkin for 10, that's 7 players for 10 mill.

Kadri just had a great year and that will cost the leafs. 3.5. Leaves them 6.5 for 6 players. Average 1 mill a player to leave some room for callups. Oh wait, Franson is RFA. He just had great year, too. 3 mill (if not more) for him. 3.5 for 5 players. Yeah... I don't think the Leafs will target Malkin for that price.
The Leafs can free up another $10 mil just by trading/amnestying Grabo and Komi... we'd go after Malkin 10000% if he hit the market, and we'd be willing to give him more than 10 if possible.

Leafs also have 2 compliance buyouts... Komiserek 4m, Grabo 5.5 or Liles 3.5. Leafs are in great shape for the new cap hit.

Reality of the new cba hasn't set in for some people here. If Malkin wants a $10 million by 8 year contract he'll get it.

Wouldn't matter anyways. Pittsburgh will deal Malkin's rights to the western conference so they don't have to face him regularly.

Letang's gone. I don't care what Shero said at the press conference today, if he's asking for $7-$8 million, he's being shipped out.

People have been saying this for years and it hasn't happened. That's a lotta "marked" words that have become falsified.

Pens have the deepest D prospect pool in the league. D isn't an issue. Also, Malkin is getting like a million dollar raise, it has a very small effect.

I agree If Pittsburgh gives Malkin $10 Mill there is no way there going to give Letang around $7 Mill-$8 Mill on top of that it would be crazy and Pittsburgh would be strapping it'sself for years to come also pretty much like what Chicago is doing.

10m? That's it? Good news for Pittsburg then, the guy could command near max. 10m is probably less than Crosby since his 8.7m caphit is artificial.

We already know Shero told Crosby that if Sid signed that same deal, that Malkin would likely become Pitt's highest paid player. Crosby gives 0 ****s about who makes more money, he's just obsessed with the number 87.

Likewise, Malkin has said in the past that NO ONE in the league should make more money then Sid, and that he want's to resign without hindering the team too financially.

It's not an issue. . .At all.

How'd that work for Nashville when they traded Hamhuis' rights to the East?

Just because the rights are traded isn't a guarantee the guy is going to sign.

I really can't see Malkin being traded. Letang will be the one to go if he's demanding a ton of money with the nice offensive dmen prospects the Pens have.

I take radio news/rumors with a grain of source. Even with one as credible as Home Ice. Two years ago TSN Radio said the Devils were going to trade Parise to the Hawks for Patrick Kane...

Of course I believed it right away since it was TSN.

But assuming this is true..I don't know any team that would pay Malkin that much money besides the Pens. Yes Malkin is Malkin and is crazy good but it's still 10 million per year. He'll most likely want a long contract as well. That will be such a big risk. For any team. Honestly if Malkin is all about got money here I think he'd just go to the KHL. They'd pay more then any NHL team ever would.

Penguins should sign malkin no matter what.. Trade letang, neal, fleury (buyout?) etc. before letting him go.

If Malkin were to hit the UFA market next summer he'll get the 20% max from some team, or very close to it--$12m to $14m per season. All you need to do is consider how many teams would be willing to do $10m for him, then make the next step that someone's going to have to up the ante.

players like malkin and letang are not the ones who are going to be on the outside looking in. these are core franchise players. ANY team would find the money keep these players happy.

there are enough pieces that can be traded/ not resigned to free up ~$5 million for letang and $1.3 million worth of cap space for malkin. there is also an entire year until they become ufa. the cap could go up by that time a little to help with the situation as well.

Even if Malkin gets 10 per season he will not get more money than Sid. In Malkins case it would be a 8y 80 mil contract. Sid will earn 86.4 mil during this period.

CAP his is not actual salery!!!! and this will go up.

I still don't understand why a lot people argue that he will not get more than Sid. He will not and for that reason 10 mil per is a realistic number.

Letang will not be signing for $5M. I'm almost confident enough to bet on it, but message board bets are lame.

Good one. Start with Stepan, then add. I'm thinking:

Stepan
Kreider
McDonagh
Hagelin
1st

It's an overpayment, but that's what it would take to move Malkin to a division rival.
