Outdoor hockey will return to Chicago when the Chicago Blackhawks host the Pittsburgh Penguins at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears, the NHL announced Wednesday.

The NHL intends to announce more outdoor regular-season games in the coming weeks.

Hope we get one

Dan Bylsma given a 2-year extension. Guess that answers that. I'm glad they didn't go in a different direction just yet, Bylsma seems like a really good fit there and it would be shortsighted in my opinion to have let him go at this point.

SJ also extended Todd McLellan.

Allot of the Pens problems were Shero
Their D is terrible, and the goaltending isnt allot better.

They needed real d help at the deadline not Iginla and Morrow.
If I were Mario, Shero's leash is just as short or shortly then Blysma's.

No excuse why a team with Crosby and Malkin can't win the cup every year.

I don't know...

Vokoun isn't an All-Star anymore but way better than MAF, he's at least above average.

I 100% agree with the rest... especially that Iginla, Morrow and Murray were not the right rentals to grab.

I showed these charts on the FA thread a while ago but the three the Pens picked up were all guys with severely negative possession in decently easy minutes...
These charts are over the last 3 seasons:

The Penguins already had amazing talents in Malkin and Crosby... They didn't need aging guys who need large amounts of sheltering to be effective. They needed some guys who could be solid in 2way minutes.
They were also already using up all their sheltering minutes with the Malkin line to try and get as much scoring from them as possible (I guess to try counteract the reduced minutes taken from the Crosby line).
What they needed was the D/F that could improve their possession.
PIT had the 15th best possession at ~49.87%... barely better then WPG's 16th best 49.71... and that's with two of the best in the league.

It's funny because with Sutter and Jokinen they had the starts of what they needed... but ended up giving more to the aging guys.

Philly just acquired the rights to Mark Streit for a 4th round pick.

Interesting.

Nice move... is it conditional?
Streit is probably the best pending UFA D.

Actually... wondering about there cap space too...

From what I can tell the pick is not conditional. Straight up trade.

Flyers traded prospect Shane Harper and a fourth round pick to Isles for Streit. Imagine they'll have him locked up shortly.

Hmmm well Streit is definitely a solid D which they could use... but I'm curious if they can get what they need for cap with this. Also, if it's not conditional and he walks, then what?

Not sure, maybe it is conditional on him signing. Or, that's just the price Philly pays in order to get his negotiating rights until July 5.

PHI will now negotiate a deal with Streit. Have to believe compliance buyouts are in the works for Bryzgalov and Briere to free up cap space

Streit, BTW, is a 35+ contract, meaning cap hit counts even if he retires/quits. Likely be looking for long-term deal in $5M/yr range.

Let's sit back and see if Philly signs some outrageous contract to a player already 35 years of age.

Philly is currently $2.5 million over the cap with all their current signed players.

If they give him 3 yrs (or more) @ $5 mill (or more), they are absolutely crazy in Philly.

The bolded is very true IMHO. Look back to when the Pens won the cup and I see at least two glaring holes.

Hal Gill and Rob Scuderi.

I realize the Pens scoring hit a wall called Tuuka who was out of his head but at the end of the day its guys like Gill and Scuderi that give a defense real character and gives the Pens balance to play a team like Boston. Championships are not always about the bright shiny objects.

If that philly pick is not conditional or else PH is a bigger dumb **** then Milbury.

I know it is only a 4th round pick, but you dont see allot of non conditional picks traded (or at least I haven't) for guys who are UFA's in 3 weeks.

Stupid jokes aside

You never know who you are going to get with that pick.

Why give up a chance for someone that you may not sign.

Because they want Streit? Why let him go to FA when you can trade for him?

If they dont sign him it was (or at least could be) a waste.

If they do it's a steal.

Tradeoffs...

Guess it *seemed like* was worth the risk???

IMO I wouldn't have done it for that high of pick unless it was conditional.
If non conditional I'd have to say push back to 6-7...

But I'm terrible at trade values I know my weaknesses

If the trade is unconditional, Philly is probably very confident that they'll be able to sign him (i.e. they've talked to his agent and know what it will take and are prepared to pay the price). They did the same thing with Bryzgalov (Coyotes got 3rd round pick and Matt Clackson)...and how'd that work out?

Doesn't seem like they will be interested in Buff now with Streit's contract added to the team.

Daly/Bettman news conference: Daly says it's "possible" Coyotes won't play in Phoenix next season. Says it's up to city of Glendale to...

Bettman would not mention any possible re-location cities. Says they're still focused on saving team in Phoenx
The team will be moving... in 2 weeks.

Seattle Sasquatch.

Might've been the Seattle Jets if Winnipeg had gone with the Falcons.

With all due respect to the fans of Phoenix, I hope this happens for the good of the game. I have absolutely no ill will towards Phoenix - even as a Jets fan, none, zip. But in my opinion Hockey just isn't going to work there. This has dragged on long enough. Time to close the chapter and open a new one.

Personally, I'd love to see the team moved to Quebec.
