It's an overpayment, but that's what it would take to move Malkin to a division rival.
there is not a single offer between PIT and NYR that exists that involves Malkin going to NY.

I would LOVE to see Malkin in a Panther jersey!! I don't know if he'd want to come to S.Fla, and whether we had the money and/or the peices to trade for him (if he were to be traded) but it would be a dream!! If we didn't end up with Mackinnon, draft Drouin and have a top line of Drouin-Malkin-Huberdeau. That would be incredible!!

When you arguably have the two best forwards in the NHL, on the same team, in a cap world, this is going to happen.

You could have stopped their. AHL deals don't count.

Do you think Penguins will pay him more than Crosby?
Why not? Crosby has said he's ok with it. Totally different kind of contracts. Longterm<>Midterm.

Well the whole point of the salary cap is to get League parity, so we shall see what happens here. I think it's inevitable that Crosby and Malkin are broken up eventually due to the cap system.

That said it sure does help they managed to sqeeze in Crosby's contract in before the new CBA, so anything is possible. Pens management did a good job here.

That narrows the field for Malkin an awful lot.

Very few solid teams can or will want to spend $10m per on Malkin. He is worth the money but teams that are built and competitive will have to deal away players to make room. He is pricing himself close to out of the market.

A building team could do it and build themselves around him but it would be interesting to see it done.

With that being the annual price to keep Malkin it will be interesting to see him do anything other than sign with the Pens. Can't see a team dealing away a ton to get him for one year if they didn't plan on simply giving him the $10.per.

No D man has an amazing season so he just gets the Norris? I don't really see Malkin winning the Norris before he hits UFA but that could help him get 10M.

This is just the result of all the cap circumvention contracts finally coming home to roost. 10M is the same money he'd have been given under the last CBA, it just can't be hidden any more. So the stars will get what they always did, and the salaries of the mid-rank guys will stop being so bloated now - it's everyone else who will pay the price. No more 5-6M 2nd line guys after another year or two.

yr 1: 10
yr 2: 10
yr 3: 10
yr 4: 10
yr 5: 8
yr 6: 8
yr 7: 7
yr 8: 6.5

Cap Hit: 8.7mil

A deal structured like that is a possibility and would be a huge discount. On the open market I'd expect Malkin to command just a bit over 10mil a season on a 7 year deal.

He will be resigned. Plus they have him for another season. They should get it done sooner than later though. Im not sure if he will get paid more than Crosby though. If Im Malkin Im waiting until UFA starts and let the bidding war take place.

Hope the Devils offer him 7 years, 10.5 million a year. Hell, if I'm Lou, I give him a blank check, and tell him to fill it in.

I expect Pitts will soon adopt Van's internal salary structure which Gillis based off Lidstrom and Detroit.

Their is basically 4 different tiers for the core players.

Franchise guys - Sedins @ 6.1M
2nd tier - Edler, Kesler @ 5M
3rd tier - Bieksa, Burrows, Garrison, Hamhuis @ 4.6M
everyone else <4M

Malkin should settle for Crosby's 8.7M. Saving 2M here and there will allow Shero to ice a much stronger team.

Not keeping Malkin will ensure Shero ices a much weaker team.

In a cap world where Perry is has a cap hit of $8.6, Malkin isn't going to accept a cap of $8.7. The internal cap only works when it makes sense. Not saying there's no chance Malkin abides by a limit like that, but it's doubtful. Compared to a year ago, it's a completely different situation for signing star players.

I will be shocked if he signs for less then 10.6 aka the average salary Crosby is paid over the first 8 years
