Don't think that's a possibility since it would probably require both Benn and Eriksson and probably something else to acquire him in the first place.

He deserves that much so why should he take a sweat heart deal?

Crosby is the franchise. They have a huge mural of Sid in the main corridor of Consol Energy Center. Neither will be traded. If anything, I can see Letang being dealt since he can't perform in the playoffs. Not to mention, the cap issue. They will try to sign him, but I don't see it happening....

Yep. That is where the team has an abundance of talent. Plus, in truth, Letang is as much a flake as MAF. Makes horrible decisions & tries to compensate with talent alone....

This is contingent upon the player wanting to stay where he is more than changing teams to earn more money. The market will pay him more than Crosby, who is better than but earning less than Ovechkin.

Such is the hard knock life of having two superstars (most would agree two best players) on your team.

Penguins will probably trade Letang before they let go of Malkin. I don't really see a problem keeping him.

Leafs have to sign enough players to make a team for next season. When Malkin is coming up on UFA, so will Kessel and Phaneuf.
Gardiner will be a RFA Matt Frattin, too.
McClement and Kulemin as well.

Leafs can drastically change their team if they so wish, but I would imagine they'd want to keep some of their current players. I would imagine the Leafs would want to keep their current team and tweak it. It made the playoffs, why risk a year of failure for a slim hope to get Malkin as a UFA ? He'll probably be dealt if there's even the slightest hint that he's not going to re-sign.
Komisarek is a free agent at the same time as Malkin, so we don't need to buy him out, and two compliance buyouts on Liles and Grabovski as a worst case scenario.

And outside of Kessel and Gardiner, what franchise would pick keeping Phaneuf, Frattin, McClement or Kulemin as a priority over the chance to add Malkin to the mix?

That's just dumb. Also, the cap could probably go up.

This is the second post I've seen like this.

I thought it was obvious he meant if Malkin hit free agency.

I fully expect Shero to do what he did with Staal and make offers to Malkin and Letang... if they can't come to an agreement, I can see one of them being traded at the draft.

Why let them hit FA when they can trade them and retool their team and cap situation with 1 trade.

I doubt Shero would choose to move Malkin or Letang, and they may already have their mind set on re-signing.

This is all hypothetical, but if the opportunity was there I'd offer JVR, Rielly, and a 1st for Malkin. Pittsburgh gets 2 former top 5 picks on with team friendly contracts plus another ELC. They would save up money to pay Iginla 5 mil a year, with money left over for upgrades on D and possibly C. With Rielly Pitt will have one hell of a promising D core.

With Malkin, Toronto would have the best top line in the league while losing players that they would like to keep, but can afford to trade for a player like Malkin. 2 years ago, this trade would look like Schenn, 5th overall in 2012, 21st overall in 2013... turning that into Malkin would be great asset management.

For Letang I would offer Gunnarson, Kulemin, 2nd. Don't know how the value looks here, but Letang would be a perfect RHD to acquire.

Their both great players and Pittsburgh may not even think about trading them, but we'll see what happens.

Crosby's deal is frontloaded, while any potential deal with Malkin cannot be.

Even if Malkin is making more, he's taking longer to get it, so they'll be pretty close to even all things considered. Compound interest and whatnot.

A raise of $1.3 million wouldn't be anywhere near enough to get the Penguins to consider moving the guy. Letang will be moved long before Geno would be.

Negotiations will go exactly as they did last time - the Pens will hand him a blank contract where he'll fill out the terms.

no, he will stay a Penguin. Letang, on the other hand, could realistically price himself off the team.

however, even that is unlikely with how Shero bent over backwards to keep Bylsma and his "yes" men. i could see Shero overpaying for Letang and crippling the slim chances they already had of building their depth.

If Geno would had been greedy money, he would had ship to the KHL for a gazilion rublos.

This year he is already making more money then Crosby, 9 milion $ vs. 7.5 milion $, so there is no money ego here.

Does he deserve a big rise over a contract he signed 5 years ago when the nhl cap was 56.7 milion $ ? Hell yes. Does he wants all that money ? Maybe not.

In a cap world where Perry is has a cap hit of $8.6, Malkin isn't going to accept a cap of $8.7. The internal cap only works when it makes sense. Not saying there's no chance Malkin abides by a limit like that, but it's doubtful. Compared to a year ago, it's a completely different situation for signing star players.
Next few years are going to be interesting to see play out. If teams over commit cap to stars they are going to have terrible depth as the teams with cheaper stars can hover up quality mid-tier players. Should make for some interesting matchups, might help a few of mid salary teams.

The only thing that could make Geno leave Pitt would be him wanting to be ''the guy'' on his team instead of a guy lurking in Crosby's shadow and quite frankly I don't think he's all that happy being an afterthought when Sid is healthy.
