Buyout Chris Pronger this offseason, Bryzgalov next offseason

I know I'm going to get flamed for this by the Briere haters on here, but doesn't he only have 2 years left on his contract anyway? That's not that bad, might as well buy out Chris Pronger so he can finally retire (if he wants to), then buyout Bryz next offseason depending on how he plays. Briere will then be gone the following offseason.

You can't buyout an injured player and only Dr. Nick would clear Pronger to play at this point.

Oh, wasn't aware of that. Well this topic's been nullified.

Yes, and as long as he is injured, his contract is not counted in the cap. This would be crazy even if they could

Makes no sense to use it on Pronger.

I made this topic because I came across this article a few weeks back:

http://www.danglesaucephilly.com/201...alov-will.html

But yeah, it is a dumb idea and isn't possible anyway.

Yes and no. Pronger on LTIR means the Flyers can exceed the cap limit by the amount of his contract; it's not exactly the same as the cap amount not being there. Plus, having a player(s) on extended LTIR means less available banked space for a deadline deal.

And the Flyers may be able to trade Pronger in the 2015 offseason to a cap floor team who would only have to pay him $575,000 per season for two years while getting an annual cap hit of almost $5 million.

Why would we bother wasting a buyout on Pronger? He's not hurting us at all, his cap hit is essentially nothing. Bryz is just an anchor.

I find it hard to believe we couldn't trade Briere instead of buying him out. Surely he's more attractive to certain teams as he is now rather than if he's bought out? I know he's got kids and all, but there has got to be somewhere he'd want to go and live for a couple of years?

that's not true

you can trade an injured player if the team you're trading him to is aware of the injury

it works the same way as a player that isn't playing this season (Thomas) or has retired but still carries a cap hit (Malakhov)

It's really not that hard to understand why we can't trade Briere. Simple put, he has a NMC and can make more money by signing a new contract. If we trade him, he'll get $5m over the next two seasons, but if he forces us to buy him out, he'll get $3.3m from the buy-out, and then whatever else he gets from his new contract he signs (which will be more than $1.7m)
