We have Subban as our only established elite talent, they have Keith, Toews, Kane and Hossa as their established elite talent. Not even close.
Yet even with that unbeatable lineup, the Hawks were dumped in round-one last year, as well as losing in 2011. There's no such thing as one model for success. The Toews/Kane model is very different from the grittier Kings model with elite goaltending, which is very different from the smothering defense and net-crashing of Boston's model, which is different from the relentless scoring power of the Pens model, which is different from the super-skilled & brainy Russian Red-Wings model.

The Habs will continue building a speed & puck-posession model - hopefully with some added (and strictly functional) size. Will that formula be enough for a Cup? It might be, depending if our upcoming prospects and/or trades are superior to the upgrades of our rivals. Sure, I'd love some of the talent the Hawks have, but there's no point comparing because we have no way of knowing how our players will develop in two or three years. We have no 40-year-old captain set to retire and, aside from Subban, there's no reason to think that anyone massively overachieved last season. All the important pieces remain. We have quality coming in and very little going out, other than through the inevitable trades.

So, if Subban wins the Norris, how much do you think he will ask for following next year .... 7 or 8 or even 9 million per year? Definitely a lot more than the $2.8M he is making now. It is nice to win trophies but it will be like losing an established FA since that extra 5 million of cap space will go to Subban.

What if I say: Galchenyuk is comparable to Toews and Kane in terms of talent when these guys were 19 too? Or even Hossa?

Better?

I was in favour of throwing good money at PK five months ago and locking him up long-term. Would've cost us more in the short-term but saved millions over the next six or seven years. Whatever. That ship's sailed. Now we're in the same boat as any other team with a legit star. The solution is simple: Pay 'em. There's a reduced cap, so I doubt we see anything more than $7M per year, but Subban will definitely get more than Price and will have earned it.

You guys are discussing players like they're car engines. Development, skill sets, maturity, environment, they're totally unique to each person. Forget the Hawks and forget comparing lineups. Hawks were smart, patient and lucky with their prospects and ended up with a winning roster. We can, too. Geez - we've got a GM who cut his teeth in that very franchise! Bergevin saw how it was done in Chicago. Give him time to build our team through a similar process - even if the results will never be exactly the same.

I'm just happy to be old enough not only to remember it but to have been present for most of the games at the old Forum in '93. I was 17 and graduating from high school but didn't miss many of the games! Still remember the Desjardins hat trick and the McSorley stick incident.
