At this stage we don't even know if the Canucks will qualify him or not.

I would love to see us sign Steckel to mentor Lain for 1 or 2 years. If Lain could have a career like Steckel I'd be beyond thrilled

Who knows. He had some AHl games under his belt and didn't impress. That said, he gets a better idea of what he needs to do to excel as a pro and a summer of training can do a heck of a lot. He might be a completely different player when camp opens, and given his skill set IF he is able to handle a handful of NHL minutes every night that is likely where he will start (they don't need to groom him for offense but rather a 4th line type role). But that is a big "if" for any player that just turned pro.

If this guy is starting on our roster as a regular at the beginning of next season, something went horribly wrong in the offseason. He needs to stand out at the AHL level before even thinking about making the show.

Weird, his deal is only a year?

Did something go horribly wrong or did he simply win the spot on the roster during camp?

A summer is a long time for a young player and there is no need for a guy to be a standout at the AHL to know he's ready for the NHL.

Or he comes to camp, impresses the new coach, who uses him.

AV has caused us to over think this stuff a lot.

By all means, if he can win a spot out of camp fair and square, keep him up. But given his AHL stint less than a month or so ago...

...well, the odds aren't in his favor. I'll put it that way.

Yeah, they chose to start his ELC this current season as opposed to the next one. Due to his age, he was only eligible for a 1-year ELC.

It's possible he won't even be brought back if the Canucks weren't happy with how he did in the AHL. (Probably will but just saying... talk of NHL starting spot is premature.)

No. But he's still an RFA so he's our player (providing they want him).

Well he was far from a standout in his AHL stint.

I doubt he makes the team as he is still a project.

I'm not impressed. Let's see if we can find someone taller who is similarly unqualified to be our 4th line Center.

I suppose it's possible the wouldn't re-sign him, but it would be rather absurd to give up on him after 13 games.

Good way to 'test drive' a prospect and not risk losing them to another team. It's not as if his AHL stint was brilliant or anything (far from it). I don't really have an opinion one way or another — it would depend on how they feel about the contract limit and their ability to find better players to sign instead of Lain.
