But, but, the Flyers have to watch out because the Predators and other teams are going to offer sheet him when he gets to RFA......

Would you rather have Giroux or Perry? Who is more valuable?

He's getting over 8M/yr unless he signs a short term deal, then I could see it being under 8M.

Well right now Giroux but Perry had the hardware and was a possible UFA. The situations are different.

Very true. It will be interesting if him being an RFA plays into this. If he signs another "bridge" contract it could very well be under 8M/yr.

I think he signs long-term as for money we'll see I think he'll sign for anywhere in between $7.5M-$8M but I could see him getting more. It depends on how much he wants to get paid and how much he wants to win.

He took a pretty friendly deal the last time by resigning earlier then he had too. I wouldn't blame him for maximizing his money this time around.

He should be expecting the Getzlaf special - $8.25M.

That's what makes me think he'll try to cash in big with this contract.

Then again, he could take another "home town discount" again.

I just have a hard time seeing a player with his caliber and potential taking/getting anything less than 8M/yr especially under this new CBA.

I don't think there is a big difference between RFA and UFA if you want to sign a player by the calibre of a Claude Giroux long term. He will fetch something around 8 million per year. My bet is Getzlaf money, maybe a little more.
Should he sign for less (7 mill for instance), I'd be shocked.

He's been underpaid on his current contract, so I expect him to make up for it in his next deal. 8mil+

Giroux is exactly the type of player who should get 8 years. He's young but proven, and still has the potential to get better.

Or worse.

Unbelievable how things how are changing fast. Not so long ago Giroux would have gotten 6.5, now people are OK with giving him 8 million? 8 million?

I see maybe three forwards max worth getting north of 7 in this league.

To be fair, not so long ago there weren't limits on contracts.

I don't expect anything less than $7.5m. Why give a home town discount if you might end up in a new town 10 months from now.

Based on what? An arbitrary valuation of the number 7?

When Danny Briere signed his contract in 2007 ($6.5 AAV), the cap was only $50.3 He was taking up 13 percent of the team's maximum space.

The same 13 percent of $64.3? $8.31 AAV.

Obviously Briere was UFA and it was a bit crazy that summer (see Gomez, Scott), but I think you're a bit off in your evaluation here. Giroux is comfortably a top-10 forward in the world, and probably nearer to 5 than 10.

What? If there's one guy we should be giving all that to, it's Giroux.
