Opening night line up (and resulting concerns)

Been spending some time thinking about what the Sabres line up will look like on opening night, for the sake of simplicity let's assume no trades or draft picks...I didn't resign Pardy, Sulzer or Hecht, but if you want to include them, go ahead

Vanek - Hodgson - Leino
Armia - Grigerenko - Ennis
Foligno - Ott - Flynn
Kaleta - Porter - Tropp

Ehrhoff - Pysyk
Myers - Sekera
Ruhwedel - Weber

Miller
Enroth

Not exactly scaring Boston with that line up. What do you guys think?

Regier's mandate has nothing to do with team performance and everything to do with whether he ads to the roster.

"Let's project opening day lineups without guessing trades or signings! Yeah!"

Personally I am not into projecting the line-up at this point because there will be moves. Miller being shipped out seems almost a certainty and he will likely return a roster player. Outside of that, even if we don't make another big move like moving Vanek you have to think a bottom 6 forward and defenseman will be added no matter what.

You're pegging guys like Grigorenko, Armia, and Pysyk that don't have any basis for being there. In my mind, it's similar to assuming that the Sabres will sign Horton, Clowe, and Clarkson to fill out a lineup. If you're looking at a bare minimum lineup without trades, rookies making a huge jump, or free agents, you can't project 13 forwards, 7 D, and 2 G without making some reaches in one way or another.

too soon to be plugging so many youngsters in...
right now, the lineup looks something like this...

Vanek-Hodgson-Ott
Foligno-Ennis-Stafford
Leino-Porter-Flynn
Kaleta-Gerbe-Scott (i know, no center)

Ehrhoff-Myers
Weber-Sekera
Ruhwedel-Pysyk

Miller
Enroth

at least 2 guys in that lineup, probably won't be here...maybe more

Grigorenko could go back to junior
Armia doesn't need to be rushed
Girgensons probably could use another year of seasoning

it's going to be a painful year... no reason to rush any of the prospects

Ok fine, the point wasn't to guess the opening day lines to a man and the winner gets a free ice cream cone.

It was more an exercise in looking at where we stand before any roster moves. This way, we can see realistically and hopefully somewhat objectively what we need/should/can do through the summer.

This is what a real management team would do, not plug trades with Colorado into NHL13 and see if the computer accepts them.

I'll go first: Projecting Armia and Grigs into second line spots should speak to my point. On the forward end, that is our weakest point. I don't like those three out there together being picked on by the Lucics, Dustin Browns and Bryan Bickells of the world.

So what can we do about it? Are Clarkson or Clowe available at a reasonable price? I highly, highly doubt Horton leaves Boston for Buffalo. How about Sean Couturier as the center here?

Last preseason everyone was quite excited about Leino-Grigorenko-Ott,
But they never had the chance to play together.
First youngster to be called up seems to be Larsson, no?
Hodgson, Grigorenko, Larsson, Porter gives space to move Ennis back to wing.

Vanek-Hodgson-Stafford
Leino-Grigorenko-Ott
Ennis-Porter-Flynn
Kaleta-Larsson-Gerbe ....idk

We need a top 6 RW badly. Ott is not a top 6 winger and brings down offensive players. I hope Grigs can step into a top 6 center role, Ennis would be best suited as the #2 LW behind Vanek.

I wouldn't be surprised if Regier expects Flynn to take on a bigger role next season. He plays a very Pominville-like game and might be able to chip in offensively. I

oh look, another episode of "Things That Aren't True"...
Benn has 4 seasons with PPG totals of .50, .81, .88, and .80... guess which season Ott was his linemate?

I didnt know Benn played for the Sabres. Ott is a blackhole for good players. Use your advanced stats on this years Sabres Team for possession that you oh so love to point to as gospel and show that Ott doesnt degrade talent.

Didn't Ott play with Modano at some point? If Ott was a big ball of offensive suck why would he ever be on the same line as one of the best Stars in history?

Maybe I'm wrong. Feel free to correct my confusion.

Benn and Ott were linemates, and Benn had the best season of his career. This is a fact, that lies in direct opposition to your claim.

Looks like you are suffering from another case of not understanding advanced stats within context...

your statement, that Ott "brings down Offensive Players", is false. but your welcome to embarrass yourself attempting to use stats you don't understand to back up your false statement... go for it, i can't wait

Vanek - coho - tropp (ended 2012 doing well)
Leino - Grigs - ott (you wanted to see the preseason magic)
Foligno - Ennis - stafford (crap shoot)
Flynn - porter - kaleta (can't see anything better)

Ott is good enough to be the worst offensive player on a top 6 scoring line. He's at least OK at everything. He gets shots on net and battles for the puck. If it's OK for Foligno to be on such a line it is for Ott.

Ideal? No. But workable.

This is exactly what I'd do as it now stands (with Gerbe as the injury fill-in wherever needed).

But, as has been said... it won't stand like this on opening night

IMO, I'm scared if Ott is in top 6 because of skill level. If he is in the top 6 because of Chemistry, then thats okay. At this moment now, He's in top 6 for his skill level.
