Hurricanes open to move 5th overall pick

Friedman on HNIC mentioned that the first four overall picks are unlucky to move but that the Hurricanes are open to move their 5th overall pick. Sounds like they are open to move that pick to make their team 'better' today but what do they need. A top 4 dman?

What would get them to move that pick?

Carolina is in a GREAT position at 5. They will get alot of offers for this pick if they make it known they will trade it. At #5 there will forsurely be one of Drouin, Barkov, Nichushkin available (Drouin most likely will be gone, but you never know what Tampa will do at the #3 spot) I read alot of rumors that Tampa may draft Nichushkin at 3. And it seems as though Nashville will take Barkov at #4 forsure. I feel it will either go Drouin, Barkov, Nichushkin at 3,4,5 or else Nichushkin, Barkov, Drouin 3,4,5.

Carolina could cash in HUGE if they trade this pick

I have read that there is supposed to be a bigger drop off in talent from #4-5 than there is from #5-50 so it seems like a very smart thing to do if they don't have a player they think they need to get at #5.

Nichushkin will be the wild card. Which team will pay enough and take the risk?

Be interested to know what Carolina fans felt it was worth. I'd say a legitimate top 4, maybe 3, defensemen, a 1st, and a top 9 forward.

That seems like an awful lot to pay for a draft pick that a lot of people are saying probably won't be a lot different from the #50 pick.

I'm not sure where you read that. To me there's a pretty clear Top 6 (and maybe 7) of Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, Barkov, Lindholm and Nichushkin (and possibly add Monahan, depending on how you feel about him).

Lindholm is the highest draft-eligible SEL scorer since the Sedins. Nichushkin's KHL playoff performance was exceptional for his age.

If true, I expect the Devils to be very much on the phone with Rutherford to see if they could move up to 5 from the 9 slot.

Devils do have some solid defensive prospects to offer up.

I find it incredibly unlikely a team with no first next year, no second this year and a bottom 5 prospect pool in hockey has the assets to move up.

If Carolina is looking to move back they are probably looking to move in the 6-10 range, leaving options as Calgary, Edmonton and Dallas.

Calgary has three 1st round picks
Edmonton has three picks in the top 60,
Buffalo has picks 8/16/38/52/68
Dallas has two first round picks

If the Devils were looking at shuffling at the draft moving back would be a more realistic option

EDIT: Devils have 2013 2nd

Sounded like the Canes have been in talks with Edmonton about moving down to #7, which would be pretty consistent with what JR has said scouting's opinion is on this draft. If they think they can still get their guy at #7 then why not try to pick up another late 2nd in the process, and/or another asset they could use?

Seemed like Edmonton is high on Monahan, and if Calgary would prefer a center as well (Lindholm) they can still get Nichushkin.

Devils may very well move back if they don't like their options at 9.

However, to correct some of the above. Devils do have a 2nd rounder this year. Devils really have a middle of the road prospect pool. They do lack depth at forward in their organization, however they have also aggressively promoted several top talents the last few years in guys like Larsson, Josefson, Henrique and are chock full with solid defensive prospects.

If teams like Edmonton and Buffalo really want the Canes pick, they've got the high 2nd rounder to get it done. I don't see Calgary relinquishing valued assets for just jumping up one spot however.

I also don't see Dallas trading up.

Scratch the 67th, Dallas owns that from the Fistric trade. What some Carolina fans have proposed is 7th+56th+Musil which is a steep price to pay to jump 2 spots, but I'd definitely do it. And IF the Canes want Nichushkin, then they likely still get him as I think Calgary would take Lindholm and we'd be taking Monahan. MacT flat out told season ticket holders in his conference call that our 1st priority in the draft is to take a C, and that he had it MacKinnon, Barkov, Monahan.

Could we be outsmarting ourselves and giving up assets for a guy who'd still be there at 7? Possibly, but I don't feel like playing chicken with Calgary.

From what it sounded like, Carolina wants an actual overpayment, not just what ok pieces a fan base deems are expendable.

That's not even close to getting the 7th overall...

I'd really be interested in the Leafs going after that. I'd like them going after Lindholm.

Gardiner?

Is there a team that hasn't been linked to moving their pick and/or moving up in the draft? Seriously.

As a Habs fans, I think we would steal the Canes.

And its not the kind of deal that help us, cauze at the exception of Subban and Emelin our D Corps suck.

Gotta be one of the worst proposals I've seen at HF.
