Daley much more consistent and better 2 way he won't bring Goligoski's offense but he can move the puck and can skate. He's also on a really good value contract 4 years remaining 3.3 million cap hit. Maybe switch Daley for Goligoski and throw the 40th overall pick in.

In addition to the 9th Overall, which defensive prospect would you want from NJ? There's quite a few.

Rutherford has said many times that if he does move the pick it probably won't be past 7th. That is where he sees the talent drop off.

I would love to hear some Carolina fans opinions on this trade. I'm trying not to fall victim to value picks over players but Dallas does have the assets to move up.

Skip to ~50:00 of the 2nd hour of the June 4th edition of the Mark Spector show. Carolina GM Jim Rutherford was pretty specific in that he would consider flipping picks if an acceptable Top 4 defenseman was included in the deal. To me, that indicates that it would take a pretty significant return to get Carolina to move from #5.

It is interesting to note that he mentioned 6 prospects by name in that same interview (Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, Barkov, Nichushkin and Lindholm).

I have a strong feeling that Rutherford could somehow get this done: a deal around the 5th overall for Marc Staal.

The cliques thing sounds like a dumb blanket judgment that doesn't take into account individual players. Semin hasn't been any better for the Canes than he was for the caps aside from across the board down years. Caps were at their most threatening looking with Ovechkin, Semin, Fedorov and Varlamov playing together and playing well.

I can understand not wanting to get into a bidding war/waiting for Nichushkin though. That said Carolina could really really use a big skilled LW

How about something based around James VanRiemsdyk?

Potential 30+ goal winger. Fast and gritty with great size, personally I think he would be deadly playing with Eric. We could throw in a combo of picks/players/prospects

JVR, Gunnarrsson, Percy
JVR, Liles, 21st
JVR, liles, gunnar, Percy

I think there's basis for a trade there. Would suck to give up JVR with what he did last year but we really need a young center.

Drew Stafford (1 million retained over the next 2 years making him a bargain at 3 million cap hit)
8th Overall
52nd Overall

For

5th Overall

Carolina then deals Ruutu (3 years x 4.75 cap hit) in a separate deal which they should be looking to do anyways as he makes to much to be at best the 5th most important forward behind Staal brothers, Semin, Skinner. They'd be looking at an overpaid D coming back their way.

Carolina is concerned with real dollars and with Hemsky making 5.5 I don't see them having any interest in him unless the Oilers retained a lot of salary.

I would not give up a former #2 overall PWF who is finally playing the way he should.

JVR is a prototypical leaf player in the system that we want, he is as untouchable as anyone else in our system.

Frattin? Sure. JVR? hell no.

Leafs not interested in overpaying for 5th overall pick. Most I offer is our first round pick and a couple prospects not named Rielly. Gunnarsson could be available for the right deal.

Unless Barkov or Drouin are available...

His contract situation in the KHL has been cleared up, and by all accounts he has expressed desire to play in the NHL next season. There is no added risk with Nichushkin.
