1. Mark Streit will be used to bolster the "2ND PP Unit." If the Flyers sign Streit he will be used on the top PP unit and Timonen will log less overall minutes to save him down the stretch. Streit's biggest asset is his offensive prowess and it will not be buried on the 2nd unit.

2. Paul Holmgren will not factor in the "Schenn brother angle" when making trades. I disagree. I think the fact that the Flyers have united the Schenn brothers makes it less likely one of them will be traded anytime in the near future.... barring a MEGA DEAL (Shea Weber size). Part of managing a team is making your players happy, via compensation or morale boosting. The happier the player, they better they perform generally. Splitting the Schenns up could have an effect on the other.... it's human nature.... and it is definitely something Holmgren (or any thinking man's GM) would consider.
Unless you're Peter Laviolette you don't know that. It's not crazy to think that he won't break up the first PP unit.

If we have a decent 2nd unit next year the whole 1st unit's ice time might be cut down.

Yeah. The top PP could certainly change as the season goes on, but when it starts I will be surprised if it's different. The top PP unit was very effective. The second unit was the opposite of that...Briere started out really good, then when he completely tanked out nobody else stepped up.

Simmonds - Giroux - Voracek
Timonen - Streit

Hartnell - Couturier - Schenn
Gustafsson - Read

or more balanced...

Hartnell - Giroux - Simmonds
Timonen - Voracek

Schenn - Couturier - Read
Streit - Gustafsson

Not sure which I want.

I like the second option. Let Streit show Gus how it's done.

Love it. I have little time to read about hockey these days, but I read his articles daily. It is actually nice that the Flyers are not playing right now because his articles are more meat and potatoes and less "last nights results".

I think with Meltzer, if he wishes to advance his career, he would sadly need to suppress his hockey I.Q. a little bit. He's the ultimate blogger for the diehard, but I would argue that Pannotch enjoys more success simply because he is better at writing in order to provoke one's emotions rather than stimulate one's analysis.

But we love our hockey nerd for sure.

He could be the beat writer, but he'd have to make some sacrifices.

The only emotion Panatch evokes in me is unbridled fury and indigestion.

Is indigestion an emotion? I'm leaning towards yes.

Pannotchio is a disgrace to journalism. I agree that Meltzer may need to simplify some language to appeal more to the casual fan, but that can be done without sacrificing grammar and journalistic integrity.

I feel the need to bring attention to the fact that today's Meltzer's Musings on hockeybuzz opened with a Mitch Hedberg joke. Love it.

He's one of the most unprofessional journalists in Philly IMO. He incorporates his dislike for players in his articles and takes jabs at them. Right after Richards was traded he made a comment in his second paragraph of an article on CSNphilly.com calling out Richards for not talking to the media or something (again after he was gone when the subject of the article was something entirely different), needless to say the comments section was hilarious. Everyone was calling him unprofessional etc. and soon the comment was removed from the article, I would say within an hour of it's post.

All I know is if I were as bad at my job as he is at his I would no longer be employed. Bill is a much much better writer and doing anything even remotely similar to "Panatch" is counterproductive to everyone's goal in life, to better themselves.

I remember being excited about Ouellet, Boucher, and Pelletier.

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Bill-...atoes/45/52136

Bonus points for a Mitch Hedberg reference.

Which later goaltender is worth selecting? I agree on the unlikelihood selecting Fucale with the 11th.

patience and seeing the team for what they are go hand in hand. the flyers create their own problems and then don't want to deal with them, which most of the time involves patience. which leads to more problems. It's a vicious cycle of lets fix this quick. oh wait we need to do this right, screw this lets fix this quick.

In no way am I endorsing Pannacio. I remember the AOL board referring to him as Dim Tim 15 years ago. Although, the man must have been playing this game correctly for some time - intangible skills like schmoozing and playing a specific role (clown?) within the ego-laden community of Philadelphia sports media. We all know how he falls short and thankfully Meltzer is there. I hope we don't lose him to the Dallas market.

Where Pannacio deserves a little bit of credit IMO is that he's never been afraid to criticize the Flyers; he's no lap dog. Also he's decent on camera, if not in a laugh-at way. My only point was it's better to evoke sometimes an emotional response than an intellectual one to succeed in media.

My original statement was just, for Meltzer to supercede his (sadly) niche role, if he even wants to, he would need to take a few of those pages out of the intangibles chapter. But personally I don't care what happens as long as he keeps blogging for the Flyers and doesn't depart for Dallas.

Bill weighs in on the goaltender options.

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Bill-...tions/45/52157

During the Emery section-- he's right... and the Flyers had a goaltender who could move laterally quickly and was athletic. Bob. (I was okay with trading him because he was stuck behind Bryz before amnesty was around-- still hurts, however).

I forgot about Svedberg. Would be an interesting pick up and would probably be cheaper to pick up than Bernier, but would be higher of a risk since he hasn't played in the NHL.
