In all seriousness, what were all the people complaining about expecting him to sign for? What would a good contract have been? Is it just the fourth year? Don't get me wrong, I am not saying this is a good contract...I would have liked to see a three year deal as well, but I don't think that was going to happen and I don't think anyone else should have reasonably thought that. Hoped, sure. But we all knew that wasn't going to happen.

I was thinking he could be traded if the Flyers would retain 1/4-1/3 of the cap hit.

I could see us getting a conditional pick dependent on how many games Mez would play.

What if the crazy idea of Buying out Kimmo and Bryz happened. Streits new Kimmo. I heard a rumour from a guy that Briere was safe.

He's realistically worth $3.5-4.25 but w/ this FA market someone was gonna pay him and I don't see any top D men down on the farm so what should homer have done? Roll into next season w/ the **** show we have? I'm not a huge fan of the deal either but what option did we have.

Hopefully they start drafting some high potential d men from here on out.

$5.25M for 3 years and I would've had no complaints. I think that's a pretty fair outlook compared to most.

Exactly. This is what happens on the open market, guys get paid more than they're worth usually. At least this move fills a huge need. I would have been significantly more pissed to see them overpay for a guy like Horton who would be a luxury on this team. Streit fills the single biggest need on the club, and I expect that the defense will look a hell of a lot better next year with just this one signing. I wish the deal would have been a year shorter, but the money doesn't really bother me that much.

But this is HF where if you're not underpaid, you're overpaid.

I think this also means that this really is Kimmo's last year, unless he takes a pretty significant pay cut.

Why in damnation would they use the buyout on a player who's contract runs out after this year? Did you hear the rumor from the checkout guy at WaWa?

I would've preferred 2 years at his age. Hell, 2 years at this cap hit would be reasonable. Unfortunately I knew that wasn't feasible. I've just been waiting for this to drop. 3 years I could've lived with. 4 is almost certainly too long, there are very few players worth that cap hit at that age.

From the guy trying to sell me a Briere signed and framed poster at the Berlin Mart. I wonder why he was so apt to defend Briere.

Andddd we see what happens when we dont develop our own defenders.

How about, for once, we draft a defender and develop him.

So he's not gonna be a bad player 3 years from now, but 4 years from now he will?

Some of you guys I dont understand. I could see people being pissed if they were expecting a 3 year contract and he got a 5 year contract. But a 4 instead of a 3 is just trivial.

IMHO there's nothing wrong with this if he can be a good player for us through 3-4 years. And since we have the ability to trade him, if management starts to see him slip in years 2-3-4, I'm sure a trade will be doable to get him off the books.

He's a good addition to our club. Period.

Hahahahaha....well, that would do it too. Might be a bit of bias there

Just wait, Gus is getting traded before this offseason is out.

It's gonna be awesome.

This organization is determined to keep Gustafsson off the roster at all costs seemingly.

What stings is the years and the money. I'd have loved 5.25 for 3....even 5.5 for 3. But at 4 years I was hoping for a average of more like 4.5. Certainly no more than 5.

He'll probably get Mez's spot. I assume Mez is getting moved.

If not, he'll be out after 20ish games when his shoulders and back collapse like Tacoma Narrows. Then Gus will be in.

I think we get two productive years out of him and by the third he tails off considerably so yeah IMO that extra year less would have been better.

At least he doesn't have a full no trade clause, so he could be traded at the deadline to a cup contender in year 3 or 4

The writing is on the wall for Mez. I think Coburn will be shopped at the draft.

What if, by some miracle, they can get rid of injury prone Mezaros? That would mean Gus would be on the roster.

Or traded for a conditional 6th pick, then turn into a top 4 defender elsewhere.
