Did they not just sign Marek Mazanec? I thought he would be the backup or what's the story there?

He's going to backup Hellberg in Milwaukee (AHL) this season. He is not in the NHL picture for next season unless he blows everyone away at camp.

Ah let me think about that NO!!!!!!

Barring injury no one can take Rinne's job, so why trade assets when signing a UFA is the best option???

Luongo was easily the best backup in the entire league last year.

He is your guy.

Nashville
Roberto Luongo

Vancouver
Shea Weber

Shea Weber is on a terrible contract, and is a serious buyout candidate.
He might be able to prove the haters otherwise and show he is worth that kind of money with a change of scenery in Vancouver. Vancouver really likes BC players, and I am pretty sure Shea Weber is from America which is close to BC.

Nashville gets one of the best backups in the league. This guy could be a starter on most teams, and would really solidify the goaltending in Nashville (which to be honest has been very suspect, and could use an improvement).
Nashville also gets younger in this deal, and adds a Canadian Olympic Player.

Frankly I think most Vancouver fans would turn this deal down. I know Nashville is looking for a backup, but I don't think Roberto Luongo is on the market. Nashville would probably have to add something like a 1st round pick for us to take on Webers salary.

Khudobin is probably the prize of the UFA backup market. But he's only played 22 career games.

Also:
Labarbara
Ellis
Theodore
Greiss (only 44gp)

Ben Scrivens is probably available from Toronto for a pick. That being said, I think Nashville will sign Thomas Greiss if San Jose lets him walk.

Maybe Hasek is getting tired of retirement again. Backup goalies are a dime a dozen. Take your pick from the ufa market.

If I was Nashville, I'd target Stalock, Irving, Montoya or Greiss. Relatively young, cheap options who could easily spell Rinne for 20 games (assuming Predators give Pekka 60-62 starts)

Garon is good in a backup role, can also play 4-5 games in a row if needed. Him or Ellis would make most sense to me.

unless he gets a better offer somewhere else, Ellis is the obvious choice(for one more year, then we will sign Vokoun )

It's been expected for a while (After Chris Mason had a brutal season), but it's nice to see confirmation that Nashville is looking elsewhere. The article paints Dan Ellis as a likely target, as he has a Predator history (Like Mason did) and played quite well in relief of injured Cam Ward this past season. It was expected that Carolina was going to re-sign Ellis but GM Jim Rutherford recently said all Carolina UFAs would likely go to market unsigned.

well its not rocket science, of course they're looking for a back-up....

Yes because our only option is to re-sign Backstrom at $6 million a year again right? It's not like he's getting older and we could get him for around $4 million per for another year or two.

I think that Nashville will probably sign a serviceable backup like Ellis or Montoya. No one fancy or expensive. Just somebody that can handle a 17-20 game workload to keep Rinne somewhat fresh and rested throughout the season.

The Monster for a 6th round pick. Then the Wings can go sign Emery to backup Jimmy.
