[CGY/FLA]Corban Knight for a 4th round pick in 2013; signs Knight to 2-year deal

per team twitter

Quote:
The Calgary Flames announced today that they have acquired centre Corban Knight from the Florida Panthers in exchange for the Flames fourth round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.

"Corban Knight is a player our scouts have been watching closely throughout his collegiate career," said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. "When Florida did not sign Corban this spring we contacted them and asked for permission to speak with him. Florida granted teams, including ours, that opportunity on the condition that we were prepared to trade for his rights. During the past ten days we spoke with Corban and his agent, and were pleased to learn Corban wanted to start his pro career in Calgary. We were able to consummate the trade today with Florida, and are confident we will get Corban signed when permitted in July. We are thrilled to add him to our organization, and look forward to his debut in a Flamesí sweater this Fall."

I'm surprised the pick is as high as that, tbh. Thought it would be for a 6th or 7th, maybe 5th. Never thought Florida would get up to the 4th round.

Dang. Was hoping Vancouver would trade for his rights.

Not bad. I'm sure the Flames are pleased to have him and the Panthers are pleased they didn't lose him for nothing.

Finally, some good news for Calgary! Quality prospect thats finished his NCAA development. Better than anything we would draft in the 4th round.

I rarely say this, but good job Feaster

Sounds like there was an agreement in place to talk to him early (spring) and the price was probably a conditional 4th.

If that's the price to land a quality prospect, I'll pay that 10/10

John Gaudreau? TJ Brodie?

Even when players fall into Feaster's lap he gives up more than he should. Come on man. Can't wait for Shanny to turf this fool

I would laugh so hard if that pick wasn't conditional and he signed somewhere else.

Great for Flames... A 4th is nothing compared to a NHL ready prospect.

Remains to be seen if he actually signs there though.

Would be great if he doesn't sign and then signs with the Oilers.... Highly unlikely, he is from High River so he is coming home.

I think it's too much to give up, but the Flames now have 2 months to either sign him or trade him again.

I am too but it is Feaster so that explains some of it. In saying that it is a good pickup for the Flams. Knight's a local guy who's succeeded at the NCAA level and earned a chance and that's enough for me.

The one concern I have is that he'll probably be working with the AHL team in Abby and until the Flames make serious changes there (IE - new coach) it could be another story of good resources thrown down the drain for nothing.

Chances are he signs later this week.

Good deal IMO, hopefully he can jump in next year and provide us with some help at C.

What has Ward done wrong? I like what I've seen from Brodie, Baertschi, and Reinhart.

I think many Flames fans have felt the same way at least once in the last 3 years...

Phaneuf and Iggy grew up Oilers fans, and neither had a problem signing with Calgary multiple times.

The Flames have been talking to him for a while. They wouldn't have traded for him if they didn't believe they could sign him.

I like Ward too. I disagree on Reinhart though. I thought he'd be further along by now. Was very unimpressed with his stint up here. He worked his butt off and has a decent skill set, but had no idea where he was supposed to be. That's on the coach. His job is to develop players for the Flames, not win games in Abbotsford. Brodie has been excellent, way further along than I expected. Sven is right where I thought he'd be. Troy Ward is an excellent coach, better IMO than Hartley, but he needs to be given the right marching orders. Developing players and playing the Flames system is more important than wins/losses on the farm.

Here's a piece about Knight filed yesterday by Jason Gregor of the Edmonton Journal.
