Early on, I was on the "Sign Streit" Bandwagon, and I'm still ok with it on a one or two year deal, but the more I read, the more I think it's his name getting him all of this attention. If a team signs him to a 3+ year deal, they're going to regret it in a bad way.

Let's focus on forwards instead. There are a number of interesting options: Horton, Roy, Ribiero, Stalberg, Weiss, Brunner, Iginla, Dupuis, Elias, Clowe, Jagr, Morrow, Ryder, Gagne, MacArthur, Penner, Flipulla, Raymond, Clarkson, Bozak, etc, not to mention guys like Briere, Richards, and Heatley who will likely be available after buyouts.

None of those guys are top liners or anything, but every single person I listed could bring something to this team. The list on defense is...uh...shorter.

Add Briere to my list above. Eklund says e5 that he will be bought out. I know he isn't the most reliable, but he only goes e5 when he's sure, plus he has real Flyer's sources (broke the Richards/Carter deals). It makes a lot of sense to but him out.

Are we interested in Danny boy?

Assuming Eklund is correct on Briere (I know, it's Eklund), I don't think it would matter if we WERE interested in him as he will likely get a bigger payday as an UFA than Nashville is willing or able to pay.

No thanks ...

An overpayment for an overaged player by Philly? Somehow, I'm not shocked.

Their owner doesn't have too long and has made it very clear to Holmgren that he wants a cup. What overpayments it takes to get there don't matter anymore. Philly isn't done making wild moves.

Uh-oh, looks like we might not be adding that 2nd pairing D-man after all...

As for Blum, Poile said: “If we keep him, I think we’re set (on defense). If not, then we possibly could look for somebody.”

thats just poile hedging his bets. it would be foolish to come out and say "he's gone, one way or another"

I guess he's still hedging, but it seems odd to say that about a player you just traded for

I think it just means that they knew they weren't bringing Butler back, but are still trying to decide what to do with the whole bin of borderline defensemen they have. I think they'll keep Brennan or Blum...not both.

That's what I took from it. We desperately need a #3/#4 and I think he knows it.

Not necessarily endorsing him, but Tom Gilbert's name is surfacing as a possible trade target in Minny. Could he be our 2nd pairing guy?

No. He sucks. And he's good friends with Suter.

I don't think he's the answer either, just throwing names out there for discussion.

I have faith that one of Ekholm, Blum, Ellis, Bartley, or Brennan will step up and take that spot next to Klein. Call me naive or overly optimistic, but I really anticipate at least one of them taking major strides forward.

Ekholm is the guy for me to step up. I'd actually prefer to go after Scuderi if he's at the right price. If not, Housley will have some work to do with these young kids but I think he's up to the task.

IF Clutterbuck is available, he's better than Spaling, Hali, Yip, Clune, etc... I'd love to snag him instead of re-signing any one or two of these guys.

Clutterbuck is like tootoo, except better at hockey. He'd be a nice addition if we can get him, but I won't give that much.

Bottom six agitators/grinders is the least of our worries. Someone like Edmonton, Philly, etc. who need forward depth and gritiness will pay a price for Clutter that I wouldn't want us to give.

While I completely agree, I think it untimely depends on the asking price. We haven't yet signed a number of our bottom six guys, and could easily swap out for a low pick and save the cash/cap room while improving with Clutter. That said, you're right on the # of teams and the price would probably be too much.

The asking price may not be that high, but the bidding war will be. When one of the elite grinders in the game goes OTB, a team that needs that style of play will pay up.
