It's more about the cap space and the cost it's going to take to re-sign Cal to me on this, otherwise I honestly think I'd agree with you. We don't have a ton to work with right now in terms of space.

to add a little skill with some grit, experience and special teams help, i would like to see dupuis and cooke wearing those new jerseys if the penguins don't resign them. they seem like a bargain for a short term while putting together a contender for down the road. bickell as well but he may cost more now if the hawks don't sign him.

Butterduck and kenopka would be very pleasing additions. Mcbain would definitely be the starting piece going back for me.

Does Knopka still fight, win face offs and kill penalties? I lost track of him after he went to Minnesota.

another thing i don't get (don't recall the exact numbers) is why jr said he was going to spend less than the cap next year. 62 or something of the projected 64.?.

and if they are projecting the cap to 'sky rocket' the year after to who knows how much why worry about those contracts now?

i sure don't have a good grasp on all the financial aspects. someone said, i think it was *visor wearing goon*, that the canes have an internal salary cap structure. whatever that means.

anyway, fans ***** and complain about everything - every fanbase does. i think the carolina hurricanes are doing alright overall. they got some new owners, new sponsors, new players, new uniforms, etc.. they're doing virtually the same as every other outfit in the nhl. if they can somehow improve a little each year, good.

so looking over the free agency list, it's really not that bad this summer if alot of those guys aren't resigned by their teams. some good deals in there for the canes imo. with the draft picks, some personel changes and a few deals, they should ice a better team next season hopefully.

How much space do we actually have after today's events? Had a look at NHL Numbers and we've got roughly $7.2M of cap space minus whatever we pay Lindholm, assuming he makes the team. I know we have a self-imposed cap that's lower than that, but I'm not clear how much we have to spend in free agency.

a few of those guys (Blanchard, Bellemore, Rask) on two-way deals, but I'd love us to go after Clowe for that 3rd line even if that would kill our cap

Thoughts on bringing in a guy like Rozsival for a year or two to fill out the defense?

I don't think we're going to do that anymore unfortunately, but I'd be all about making our defense harder to play against like that.

now Olesz, that could be a good opportunity to buy low and add to the 3rd line.

Clarke MacArthur would also be a good buy, I think.

Still see Komi at $1-1.5 million a year, 2 years.

Maybe Olesz, would be a great pickup for cheap but I'd guess JR likes our forward group the way it is without spending more.

well good news is if we bring in Komi and Olesz on the cheap is that we can give Bellemore and Rask more playing time in the minors on the cheap, and have much more proven depth, while spending a million more (depending on what they'll sign for) to have a more experienced group.

Tlusty - Eric - Semin
Skinner - Jordan - Ruutu
Olesz - Welsh - Dwyer
Blanch - Nash - Bowman/Westgarth

Gleason - Faulk
Pitkanen - Sekera
Harrison - Murphy
Komisarek

Ward
Peters

maybe not a contender but certainly a team that should push for the playoffs like they did the first half of this past season before injuries knocked us down like a *****slap from Mike Tyson.

Or, if Lindholm and Rask do make the team...

Tlusty-Staal-Semin
Rask-Staal-Ruutu
Skinner-Lindholm-Dwyer
Blanchard-Nash/Welsh-Westgarth
Bowman

Pitkanen-Faulk
Sekera-Gleason
Harrison-Murphy
Bellemore

Ward
Peters

And that's without either of Komisarek or Olesz considered.

So here is my guess for Free Agency. Matt Cooke is coming here. The canes started the hard sell of him at the end of the year. As for who else... I am thinking maybe one more 4th line grinder, but I am so spent from yesterday I cant think just really wanted to bump this thread up. Sooooooooo

My guess for Canes free agency:

Resign LaRose
....
Profit

But really, I don't see them doing much of anything. All the money is already spent. Look at DaveGs lineup above, is $1 million above the "budget" with no Lindholm (at least $2 Cap).

Dave's lineup has Olesz and Komisarek in it so the money isn't spent yet.

Not that one, this one:

FORWARDS
Jiri Tlusty ($1.600m) / Eric Staal ($8.250m) / Alexander Semin ($7.000m)
Jeff Skinner ($5.725m) / Jordan Staal ($6.000m) / Tuomo Ruutu ($4.750m)

Nicolas Blanchard ($0.538m) / Riley Nash ($0.735m) / Kevin Westgarth ($0.725m)
Drayson Bowman ($0.600m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Joni Pitkanen ($4.500m) / Tim Gleason ($4.000m)
Andrej Sekera ($2.750m) / Jay Harrison ($1.500m)
Justin Faulk ($0.900m) / Ryan Murphy ($1.313m)
Brett Bellemore ($0.600m) /
GOALTENDERS
Cam Ward ($6.300m)
Justin Peters ($0.538m)
OTHER
Buyout: Derek Joslin ($0.125m)
RETAINED SALARY TRANSACTIONS (1.400% of upper limit)
Jussi Jokinen ($0.900m—0.3%)

Add in Lindholms $2 million and you are already up against the Cap.

Really no room for the Canes to do much of anything.

Here is what we have actually spent:

Tlusty (1.600m) - Staal (8.250m) - Semin (7.000m)
Skinner (5.725m) - Staal (6.000m) - X
Bowman (0.600m) - X - Ruutu (4.750m)
Westgarth (0.725m) - Welsh (0.850m) - Dwyer (0.900m)

Pitkanen (4.500m) - Faulk (0.900m)
Gleason (4.000m) - Sekera (2.750m)
Harrison (1.500m) - Murphy (1.313m)
Bellemore (0.600m)

Ward (6.300m)
Peters (5.375m)

Jokinen (0.900m)
Joslin (0.125m)

CAP: $64.3m
SPENT: $59.826m
SPACE: $4.474m

Assuming Murphy and Bellemore stick, we are:
- one skater shy of the 20-man roster minimum
- two forwards shy of a proper lineup
- four skaters shy of the 23-man roster maximum

So while it's conceivable that we could sign a forward for about $2m and fill the gaps with tiny contracts, it's more likely that a significant UFA signing would be preceded by a caphit-clearing trade.

We may have to move a player or 2, but you have to...have to get tougher on the bottom 6!!

I believe that we are looking at two additional players in that line up:

Linholm (either 3rd line C or 2nd line RW)
A gritty 3rd/4th liner who can pot a few (I've mentioned Olesz in the past)

The we'll have something like:

Tlusty/Eric/Semin
Skinner/Jordan/Ruutu
Rask/Linholm/Olesz
Welsh or Bowman/Nash or Sutter/Dwyer
Westgarth

Blanchard as your first call up

I could also see flipping Lindholm and Ruutu. That 3rd line would be very solid too.

I would want Ruutu with Lindholm or Rask.

Either/
Skinner / Jordan / Lindholm
Rask / Ruutu / Dwyer

Or

Rask / Jordan / Dwyer
Skinner / Lindholm / Ruutu

That last second line pairing does not look good. I want Rask to succeed as much as the next guy, but lets get him in camp and see what he can do. I am also intrested to see how Nash looks in game. No doubt the coaches told him what he needs to workon/do in the offseason
