Couture now unless he gets better or gets drastically overpaid. Has just signed his ceiling in my opinion.
That depends on the context that you're speaking of. Nobody will come close to Thornton in terms of passing, board play, and vision. But everything else that impacts the game, Couture is close, equal, or better than Thornton and Marleau. Things like scoring goals, being in the right position in all three zones, selling out to block shots, draws, leadership, and the ability to move from center to wing.

Couture is exactly where a man of his production, age, and what the contract is purchasing is supposed to be. It's Thornton and Marleau that need to come down on their next contracts at or below Couture's.

I'd say Marleau/JT would need to be at about 4-5M on their next deals due to this big jump with Couture...especially with how much we will need to pay Pavs.

If we keep Jumbo and Marleau, I see/hope it's for AAVs around $5.5m. We could actually realistically have a decent 3rd line that could score then. I hope DW looks at the Bruins salary structure as a decent model.

If you and Thornton are still producing more and carrying most of the load then why should you two?

I think 5.5 would be the best we can hope for. I think they might get 6 mill. If they want a better chance at a cup, they should take a discount to 4.5-5 mill but they won't.

id say marleau for sure discount. but if JT is still top scorer on the team, he probably will continue to be the best paid.

And it should be. His willingness to extend is going to depend on how he feels about being a 3C here. Certainly, he could go elsewhere as a free agent and at least be a 2C. Some select places he could even be a 1C. It depends on what his priorities are.

Not necessarily. Cap will go back to what it was this past season. Boyle will be coming off the books. Really will come down to does DW WANT to re-sign Jumbo and Patty (and Boyle).

It's great deal for both sides. There's a very high chance that Couture out-performs his (new) contract.

I doubt it would go down that much but I can see them all have matching 6 mil cap hits.

Well in my case, I'm not. I carry the load defensively but Couture has been better the past two seasons points-wise. You aren't that far ahead of him. The two of us have to realize that we are older and have a higher chance of getting worse overall with our next contract whereas he is pretty close to certain to get better. It is also for the betterment of the team because if we each take 6 mil contracts next year, we give our GM about 2 million to use elsewhere. We both want a Cup at this point more than that extra bit of cash.

I figured (hoped) they could get Pavelski & Couture locked up long term for around a $12mil cap hit total, that would mean "discounts" for both of them. Couture helped out with his contract, hopefully Pavelski will too.

Good deal for both sides except i would have given couture 6-7 years

Hopefully DW can extend pavelski for 3 years at 5M and patty and jumbo for 3 years at 5-5.5M depending on how they do next season.
If theres space remaining then give Boyle 3.5-4M for 2 years

Unless we see some significant decline in Thornton's game next year, I'm not sure how you justify the first digit of his contract being a 5. Guy is still the best player on the team and not by just a little.

I wonder if his ice time will be limited to limit his scoring?

Thornton has gracefully pretended that players like Marleau, Boyle, Nabokov, Heatley, etc. are his equal. Now he has to include Couture, and then maybe Pavelski in that list? There is only so much he can do.

Exactly what he's worth. It's funny to see all the over/under payment comments. It's neither.

Thornton has no ego. He's just a goofy fun guy who happens to be really good at hockey.

Little overpaid but meh, it is what it is and will probably look better 3 years down the road.
