that just sounds hilarious..

I hope Vegas gets an NBA team. Only because I don't want another NHL city to lose out and because I hate the NBA, it's players, it's management and I don't ever want to see the league come back to Vancouver.

(Finally? After more than a decade of saying there could be, there will be.)

Sounds like expansion could happen "sooner" than later.
Oh boy. This will not end well.

Well I guess I'd have another reason to visit my family in Vegas if they get an NHL team.

I think that Vegas is much more of an NBA town though. They are much more mainstream & would be able to get a much easier bandwagon effect.

I was there 2 or 3 years ago, not many people knew what hockey was & every sports store I went into had very little hockey gear, usually it was all in a little area the size of a cubicle tucked away in the back. That being said I only met a small percentage of the people & the ones that did know what the NHL was had Canadian parents or their parents were transplants.

If given time I think the NHL could succeed in Vegas but it would be a long term project, 10-15 years. Things are finally starting to look up in Vegas financially as well so it makes sense they would try to court a professional team for 2-3 years in the future.

Also, an NBA team can have godawful attendance and still make bank off the nat'l TV deals. The NHL doesn't work that way, unfortunately.

No, you're not, but that doesn't mean the national TV deal will shrink. It's only going to go up when it's due for renewal, not sure when that is.

Is there even a potential owner anymore for Vegas?

Or perhaps, they'll may look at the KC model and make more $$ without a major leauge tennant.

Great instead of going to Las Vegas 3 times a year, I'll be going 5-6 now. New York New York just recently sent me an email about the whole expansion in front of NY NY and Monte Carlo and it seems pretty impressive. Hopefully the locals come out to support the team because the crowd will suck if its mostly tourist at the games. On th bright side, Free Parking.

I actually like Vegas (I visit almost every year and was accepted into UNLV), but an NHL team in Vegas is a terrible idea.

Sigh.

Devellano assured us four years ago "Vegas will happen" if there's another expansion. Too bad. Like Portland, Seattle, Toronto II and QC much much much better.

For the record though I don't ever see LV getting an NBA or NHL team, but NBA much more likely. The arena will no doubt be successful though.

The other thing I just thought of was that if one casino owns the arena & team it would be a major draw to that casino. If you were able to package tickets to an NBA/NHL game into your trip at a discounted price it would be a way to get them into your Hotel which would make them more likely to use your casino. I could see a casino taking a loss on a NBA/NHL if it means they make back their loses from the added traffic in the casino.

Not sure if it would work in practice but it was an idea I had.

The NHL would fail miserably in Vegas. It's also a transplant town (just like Miami, Atlanta and Phoenix).

I honestly think the NHL has learned from its sun belt mistakes. I doubt Vegas would be ahead of Quebec and the GTA.

This wouldn't be the first time that Las Vegas has been "close" to finalizing an NHL/NBA arena deal, so I won't be holding my breath on this just yet.

I don't think Las Vegas is building a new arena for an NHL. team they are buliding it for an NBA. team since Vegas is a Basketball town .

That really doesn't prove anything. It's a minor league city, it should have a minor football league team.

The 20,000-seat arena is scheduled to break ground in the summer of ‘14 and open in the spring of ‘16. The site, between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo resorts, just off the Vegas Strip, is the centerpiece of a redevelopment by MGM, owner of those two properties.

There is no proposed major league tenant for the arena, but it will be designed to NBA and NHL standards, similar to Sprint Center in K.C., Romani said. Driving the project for MGM is the need for a larger facility to book events tied to its resorts, company officials said.
