It's not a big or important factor.
I doubt it's a factor when comparing ratings between different sports, but I suspect it is a factor when you are comparing sports to regular television shows. Whereas a significant number of people get together with their buddies to watch big sporting events, I don't expect that is happening near as frequently with regular television shows.

For last night's Stanley Cup Game 3, Boston received a 27.2 HH rtg, highest local rating ever in the market for an NHL game on NBCSN

Chicago received a 16.8 HH rtg for last night's game, +7% from the Blackhawks’ 2010 Stanley Cup Final average on NBCSN in the market (15.7)

with all the talk of NBCSN being in 80% of homes compared to ESPN.

Is there a USA distribution map of where NBCSN are not available? Are there hockey fans in those areas - would that 20% make that much of a difference?

it depends on the carrier, so it'd be a pretty crappy map. It's a premium channel on Time-Warner and Cablevision, for example, big cable providers in LA and New York City respectively.

No record then? A bit disappointing as it seemed doable after a solid saturday.
Would have made for a nice spin to get past the Olympic soccer gold medal game.

I guess with more competition on a Monday, people are less likely to channel surf to a lesser known channel like NBCSN.

if It wasn't going head to head with WWE Raw, could have done 5 million easy.

Maybe in Canada. Not in the States.

You're talking 1/4th of wrestling's fan base would have watched hockey had wrestling not been on. Yeah. Doubt it. The majority who are a fan of both would've DVR'ed wrestling. In the same manner they would watch Wrestlemania over a regular season hockey game.

You should check out the Monday Night Raw thread at the Wrestling board here. Lots of posters were more interested in that than the game, one of the best Raw shows in many years from start to finish kept people tuned in.

Every person I personally know that likes wresting is huge into the NBA.

Some people just have a fetish for scripted sports, I guess

Apparently that speaks for 1/4th of their audience. I find it hard to believe that the NHL increases their audience from Saturday night (With overtime) but lost a million potential viewers because of wrestling. Very hard to believe.

Raw had that about 20 minute head start in which to lure fans in and the hockey intermissions. There were several posters who said they put the game on DVR at some point and began watching Raw. Though I of course don't count on those ratings, I had two streams going for both and I ended up paying more attention to Raw. Actually as soon as I found out Hossa was missing, I knew Hawks weren't winning that one, so my interest waned.

Sorry, but the 50 or whatever wrestling fans on a HOCKEY board aren't a good representative sample of wrestling fans...

By Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor

Published January 16, 2013

NBC Sports Network heads into the start of the long-delayed NHL season in 77.9 million U.S TV homes, compared to 75.0 million homes at the start of last season (October ’11). Another Comcast-owned network -- Golf Channel -- began the PGA Tour season earlier this month in just under 84 million homes, down slight from 84.6 million homes at the start of last season. ESPN and ESPN2 are in around 98.5 million homes in January, down from the same period last year.

Ask IU Hawks fans...it does not.
Milwaukee is not rooting for the Hawks, I bet that high spike is due almost exclusively due to Kenosha (a Chicago suburb covered by Milwaukee).

Weird what happens to New York when ALL hockey fans, not just Rangers, watch.

People love to say how bad a hockeytown New York is never considering the dynamics of having three NHL teams.

Dude what in the hell are you basing this on?
What? Because a medicore Ranger team wasn't getting a 10?

You do realize the NHL was at its peak in the 90s AFTER the Rangers won the cup and the Kings made the cup finals?
You realize this correct?

No, you don't. Instead you are taking a small, current sample and extrapolating it with zero perspective.
You realize 4 years ago in 2009, people would be saying the same thing about Boston and Chicago?
Neither of whom got great ratings?

New York is no different. Give New York a team like the Hawks or Bruins and see how much better the NHL rates than it does now.

Most of Milwaukee is and Kenosha is tiny compared to the whole metro area (4th biggest county in SE Wisconsin).

It's almost as ridiculous as the constant claims that the NBA is taking away from NHL ratings. Not the same audience.
