I'm not really familiar with those two, have oinly seen them in small parts. I find the Gauthier-Mantha comparison works better in terms of age.

Gauthier and Mantha are different players. I don't buy the assumption that if Gauthier was 7 months older or had started Juniors one year earlier he would score 50 goals instead of 22... 50 goals is alot. I think only 2 other players in the CHL scored 50 and they're about to turn 20 years old. And some players regress or plateau the year after the draft. Look at Faksa... Teams drafting Gauthier are looking at other things.

It's not just about goals, and I agree they are different players.

If you look at both purely from an offensive standpoint, you have to give Gauthier another year and compare to Mantha at 18. He probably won't score 50 goals but he should match and possibly surpass the total points.

My issue with Mantha is that he could turn into another Antropov. The skills are there, the effort isn't always. That alone can really stall a players development. I don't know about anyone else but I wouldn't be happy with an Antropov clone with our 1st round selection.
The ability is there to be a star but if the work ethic isn't, I don't the new regime in the Habs front office wants Mantha. They probably know more about the kids character than we do but at what point do we select skill over character?

I think in a draft like this you can get a guy with skill AND character at 25.

In this draft, they can probably get one at picks #34 and #36 as well.

Well, since some posters here are "baring their souls" by posting their "wish list", I thought I might as well do the same. Unlike the more knowledgable posters, I haven't bothered to try to break it down into which players in which rounds or with which choices. Instead I have come up with a list of players in order of priority that I would like to see become Habs at the end of the day. Also, this list is limited to the 6 picks in rounds 1-3 and are listed in order of preference.

Since this is just a "wish list" I have taken the liberty of adding a few players that I don't really believe will be available when the Habs draft, but have added them just in case one of them falls. These are marked them with an *. For the most part, I have tried to limit myself to those I think might at least possibly be available when Timmins starts waxing eloquently at the podium.

1. Morrissey *
2. Zykov *
3. McCoshen
4. McCarron
5. Ristolainen *
6. Poirier
7. Rychel
8. Klimchuk
9. Dauphin
10. Heatherington
11. Carrier
12. Gauthier *
13. De La Rose
14. M-O Roy
15. Diaby
16. Hayden
17. Moutrey
18. Hill
19. Dahlstrom (my personal "dark horse" choice)
20. Geertson.

If the Habs draft 4 of these guys in the first 3 rounds, I'll be happy, if they draft 5 I'll be ecstatic, if they draft 6, I want a very high paying job as Timmins' drafting consultant. *lol*

Yeah nothing wrong with the pick, I just meant at the time it was extremely surprising.

I've been high on Erne myself after watching him play three times in october and november, but I keep hearing murmurs about his character. I dunno, his game is efficient and pro-type, but these rumours just don't seem to go away.

Thanks Whitesnake!

That goal starting at the 3:28 mark was awesome. Destroys the defender in the corner and then scores off a perfectly placed shot. Great goal.

Obviously playing against some weak competition, but good size, good physicality and a couple nice snipes. Probably our 7th round pick.

This is Massachussets High School hockey. It's a notch below the big New England Prep School league and the Minnesota High School league. So it's not the best H.S. hockey, and you've got 14-19 years olds on the ice. He is dominant though.

If the Avalanche keeps the top pick in the June 30 NHL draft, it won't take the formerly presumptive candidate, defenseman Seth Jones.
After a week of internal meetings, Avalanche brass came to a conclusion: Jones won't be their pick. Instead, it could be any one of three forwards: Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin or Alexander Barkov.
"If we do pick first, we're leaning more toward one of those three forwards," Avalanche executive vice president of hockey operations Joe Sakic told The Denver Post.
Quote:
But Sakic reiterated the organization's belief that the three forwards represent the best players available in the draft.
"We feel those three forwards are just too good to pass up," Sakic said.
Smart. Sending different signals everywhere.

Biggest liars and pimps this time of year are team execs and heads of scouting answering media questions about draft picks. No one falls with this stuff and yet, they keep doing it.

What's the Avs' motive to bluff? What does the team with the 1st pick stand to gain? The only reason I can think of for this is to start a bidding war between Tampa and Florida for the Jones pick... but that's not really a bluff, it's hype around a deal they are actually willing to make. I agree with you in general, but not regarding the top pick, that team doesn't need to trick anyone.
