It depends on who the Pens pick with that 3rd and how he does in camp. Also, it's still giving up a lot for a maybe. I'd want a prospect from the Bolts as well.

It is a better fit for Vancouver I feel. Our top 4 would be more definitive. Our current setup has our top 4 sort of split up amongst the 3 pairings. With Letang we could have him playing with either Garrison or Hamhuis, two guys with extraordinary defensive capability and it allows Garrison to return to the left side. It also allows Bieksa to do less heavy lifting on the RS and he plays best when playing 20-21 minutes a night. We have missed a RHS on the PP since Salo left as well.

I think a trade could be made that is beneficial to both clubs.

Seems like Shero needing to move him or lose him for nothing hurts his value.

Can't see a staal like return especially with him wanted a NTC and 7 mill

I'll trade Nikolai Kulemin, 1st rounder in 2013 and any prospect save for Rielly for Letang.

I think he goes to a West team. Something around Eriksson for Letang would be interesting but that's If Letang has previous negotiations with the Stars and can swing a deal.

Vancouver probably isn't likely unless we move out another defenseman(likely Bieksa)

1. Letang is a better player than Staal and is a PMD which are still at a premium around the league

2. he didn't handcuff Shero by saying in front of the whole league "not only will i not re-sign with you, but i will also welcome an extension from one particular team".

MTL?

We have cap space, and for his rights, pieces like Gionta, Gorges, Ryder's rights...and damn whole lot of picks we got this year.

He's re-signing in Pittsburgh.

We already have a thread for Letang so the mods should really merge this one with that.

Edit: It has been done.

If the Avs aren't going to be taking Jones at #1, one would have to assume they would be in on any and all decent Dmen. That would certainly include Letang.

If the Avs were to trade down to #4 for example and picked up another mid 1st(BUF for ex. and the #16 pick).

Something like the #16 + McGinn + Top 10 protected 2014 1st for Letang.

People just don't get Shero. His resume is enough for them to get an idea of what kind of return he usually gets. I mean you can look at the return for Staal, Whitney, and Goligoski for proof. Namely the last 2. Letang is a higher caliber defenseman than either of those two guys and people have some how forgotten about what they brought back. Also, if anything, the need for PMD by teams has gone up since Whitney & Goligoski were traded.

Teams just threw big bucks at Streit and Gonchar, guys in their mid to late 30's. People also forgot how much teams were willing to throw at Hamhuis, Martin, and Suter.

Some how, Letang now sucks...according to this place. Good thing sports sites like TSN, etc, understand value.

McGinn would not be the player you'd be packaging in a trade for Letang.

For an unsigned UFA to be Letang, you wont get anyone a whole lot better.

ESPECIALLY, when you would have 2 Mid 1st round picks added on top of McGinn(Would easily be a 30 goal scorer along side Crosby or Malkin).

he is a UFA in one year. terms like "UFA to be" or "impending" are too vague to be applied here because his contract has one year left.

i agree with Honour Over Glory though. i wouldn't want McGinn as the main piece of a Letang deal. he's not a bad player but the Pens need a replacement for their defense before they need a winger if they deal Letang.

I was thinking the same package, but including either Gunnarson or Liles with some retained salary if need be.

The trade you mentioned, outside of that conditional pick, is closer to the type of deal Shero would make. Judging by the Staal and Goligoski trade, anyway. People assume Letang might not go for much, yet Staal got the Pens a damn good return. It's not like Letang is saying I will only sign with 1 team and test the market, he wants a long term deal, but he wants his market value, that's all there is to it. So it doesn't hurt his value any, imo.

We'll see how it shakes out, tomorrow is the GM meeting, Shero has a chance to meet with Letang's agent and sniff out any indication of Letang's agent possibly budging from his per year/cap hit amount. If it's a set amount and they are dead set on it, then you now have the biggest name on the trade market at that point in time for this year's draft.

I like the Vancouver trade because it gives the Pens another forward that could be ready soon, in WBS (we need that badly), a 1st, and a defenseman that is signed long term that is a damn solid top 4 as well.

If that was offered to Ray, I'd take that and speed up the paperwork.

thanks once again for your valuable contribution to yet another Pens-related discussion.

Letang has significantly more value in the real world than you think he does. get over it.

You saw him in 4 games, apparently now you are an expert. Don't act all Andy Sutton on a message board pretending as your word, about an NHL player you know very little about, has value.

I guess Tyler Seguin sucks then. Am I doing this right?
