they're kind of fun to watch, but games should not be decided on things you do when bored and playing street hockey.
It's just a season and 1point won't kill us, so why not continue the game and have a winner instead of finishing the game in a tie...because anyway the 2 teams will have a point, why not have a winner?
Three shootouts is more than enough for an entire season, let alone the team's first game.
Let's hope for no more this year, since shootouts really suck!
Well lets hope that every game we lose goes to the shootout, because if we dont make any shootouts anymore teams like the leafs will make it into playoffs because of the bonus points there going to get in shootouts.
Your going to find with the frequency of the shootout this year so far that teams are going to make the playoffs on bonus points, and teams are going to miss the playoffs because of it too and its going to anger people.
So to save frustration when playoff time comes around we should hope to play in shootouts so we dont get beaten out by the leafs because they went to shootout or OT a couple more times then us.
I don't mind shootouts, but I don't get why a team still gets 1 point for loosing in extra time? Wasn't that rule put in to encourage teams to settle the game in extra time and play more offensively since they will get only one point if they remain tied? Since now there are no more ties, there is no reason to play more offensively since they could win it in the shootout. All it is doing now is making teams play more defensively in the 3rd period when tied to get their garanteed point.
Sure shootouts suck when your team is the one that deserves the win after battling it out throughout the game and then the coach picks the suckiest players to do it .
It's all part of the game now .....
Sorry to intrude but I agree with the topic. I think Shootouts as they are currently done in the NHL are awful.
Many times I have watched a game (with or without my Leafs team) be tied after 3 period, I then sit down and watch an exciting OT which ends after 5 minutes and then the shootout pretty much kills the excitment for me.
first there's the long delay between OT and the shootout.
then it's only 3 shooters. I'd much prefer they use the IIHF shootouts of 5 shooters.
or my personal favorite would be to expand OT to 10 minutes. If teams are still tied after 10 minutes of 4 on 4 OT then damnit they deserve to be tied.
Shootouts actually make teams try to win a game in OT rather than sit back and kill the OT to bag the point for a tie. Teams really don't want to go to the shootout which makes them try harder to win it in OT. Would you rather a team finish with 11 or 12 ties in a season, because if you remember that's what was happening. Ties are boring. Shootouts are exciting. Knowing the game will have a winner and a loser is the way it should be. A shootout resolves that.
