Well he might be, but I think it's far more likely to happen next offseason, if at all.

That being said, TB still passes.

If you follow the news stations as well as you claim, you'd know that the buzz is about Lecavalier being bought out by another team so the Lightning can re-sign him at a cheaper contract, so where's the talk about replacing him coming from?

He's one of our only players that holds real value and isn't "untouchable"

Is there anything the Oil could offer to move from 7 to 3 that is realistic? I know TBay's defensive prospect pool isn't too shiny, what about this:

To TB: 7th overall, Marincin, Gernat, 2014 1st

To EDM: 3rd overall

The right scenarios would have to happen of course regarding the first two picks, but if Jones and MacKinnon go, and we traded up and took Barkov, it would seem likely Nichushkin or Lindholm (who plays C and W) would be there at 7. Just a thought.

As an aside, HNIC did show MacT sitting with Stevie Y.

Edmonton simply can't afford to do this.

We're not in a rebuild anymore.

Please, HF, get that through your head.

OMG! NO!

Edmonton is not cleaning out their prospect pool for futures! This is insanity!

I also don't get why other Oiler fans are in a rush to trade him. It's probably due to a stupid obsession with size without realizing that giving up skill to get size isn't going to make the team any better.

This is actually pretty easy to explain.

The Oilers need more size down the middle to complement RNH. They would also be looking for more of a two-way guy. Gagner's forte is in the offensive zone, and despite the criticism he gets he actually does produce very well for a #2C, especially at his age. On a team with Hall, Yakupov, and Eberle along with RNH guess who is the odd man out.

I don't think anyone wants a plug as the #2C. The point is to get size and skill. That is what makes the exercise so hard. Though size is not really the only factor. YOu want someone who is more of a two-way center. Mike Richards is not that big but he would certainly fit the bill.

I'm not the one who suggested that, but whoever you get at #3 could step in immediately

What makes this deal interesting is that Tampa is the team that has expressed the most interest in Nichushkin. If they're thinking of taking him at 3rd and they trade down to 7th, there's a decent chance he'd still be there. At least that's what Edmonton is worried about and one of the main reasons they might trade the 7th pick.

Yeah, but Gagner fits no real purpose in Tampa.

Gagner might not be the right piece, but Nichushkin + [asset] > Nichushkin. To move up to third Edmonton would pay a price, I just don't know what piece would suite Tampa best.

Of course, that's assuming he's the player they want. Also, Tampa would be taking on a risk that Carolina might take him, but Edmonton and Calgary are very unlikely to, and I don't think Nashville would if Drouin is on the board.

If they think Nichuskin is the BPA, then they should just take him at third.

We have the same needs, basically - defense. Unless we're getting someone who can jump into the lineup now, it doesn't do us any good. Syracuse is packed with guys looking for ice time at all positions and the big club needs help now. It'd be Fistric, one of the Shultz kids, or Smid and a pick, and Edmonton won't budge on that.

I'll keep Samwise and draft one of Lindholm/Monahan/Nichushkin/Nurse

Well now that Vinny can't even re-sign in TB anymore they have quite the hole at 2C but I could see them signing Weiss. Who will not be re-signing in FLA before free agency.

Hope Oilers offer Vinny a contract. Probably will get more than what he's worth. But I heard he's looking to retire on his next contract so maybe will accept a lesser average if a little longer term. Maybe Oilers look at the option??? Makes Gagner moveable, especially if drafting a centre at 7.

No to this deal though..

Brett Connolly and Tyler Johnson are both kids that the bolts have that has top 6 potential. Both of them are arguably ready for an NHL spot.......Don't really see a need all that much. I see a youth movement happening this year, and we probably will have a good pick next year as well. Even if we got Gagner, he wouldn't really do anything but delay the inevitable before Connolly or Johnson stole his job.....Don't really see the point of this.

I think this is good value for the 3rd overall pick, but if I was Tampa it wouldn't be enough for me to move the 3rd overall. When Tampa won the cup it was on the backs of first and foremost two young stud centers, the super skilled jitterbug Marty St.Louis, Boyle, and Khabibulin. If they want to be contenders again they will need more elite skill and that would come from the 3rd overall pick. Right now they only really have two solid building blocks in place in Stamkos and Hedman, if it was me I would look at taking the stud center (Barkov) or the heir apparent to Marty St.Louis (Drouin). With that in place you just need one more franchise player, strong goaltending (which you might have but is too soon to say), and solid role players to surround the core and you have the makings of a strong team.

Gagner is a good player and whomever is drafted 7th overall will in all likelyhood be a good player as well, but I think it's a hard sell when you have an elite player staring you in the face.

I was curious as to whether or not this would historically be a good trade so I looked up the last 10 draft years, I figured I might as well add them here to add to the discussion-

2012 draft: Dumba + Gagner vs. Galchenyuk
2011 draft: Scheifele + Gagner vs. Huberdeau
2010 draft: Skinner + Gagner vs. Gudbranson
2009 draft: Kadri + Gagner vs. Duchene
2008 draft: C. Wilson + Gagner vs. Bogosian
2007 draft: Voracek + Gagner vs. Turris
2006 draft: Okposo + Gagner vs. Toews
2005 draft: J. Skille + Gagner vs. J. Johnson
2004 draft: Olesz + Gagner vs. C. Barker
2003 draft: R. Suter + Gagner vs. Horton
