At the time, I think many people acknowledged the overpayment on Carolina's part.

Although, you have to think that Shero is missing Staal right about now.

This is true, of course it was a temporary loss for the Penguins, but when Dumoulin and Pouliot are in the NHL it will be a win.

(This is of course in my humble, non-hockey playing opinion, so it probably doesn't mean anything).

Jux, we aren't getting a Staal return for Pavs

1. Rutherford is a terribly stupid GM who actually sees value in making gimmicky moves that aren't beneficial to the long-term success of the team, like massively overpaying for Eric Staal's brother when they already have plenty of Forward depth.
2. Jordan Staal agreed to re-sign in Carolina.

Look. For the Penguins, the future is now. Malkin and Crosby are in their primes. If/when Dumoulin and Pouliot mature, how good will the Penguins be?

Of course, there were reasons to trade Staal. He wanted a bigger role, plus cap space, etc. Reportedly, there was even more going on behind the scenes. And what they acquired isn't that far away from helping the current roster.

But if they could have kept Staal, the right move would have been to keep him. It would have been a different story had Staal been on the Sharks.

They actually couldn't have kept Staal. They offered him the same contract he signed with Carolina, $6M AVV over many years, and he didn't sign it. They couldn't offer him more because of the cap. Staal really screwed them over.

Whats funny is the Pens fans were having the exact same discussion we have about Pavelski about Staal.

He's happy as a third line center! He doesn't want to go anywhere else!

Not saying Pav's will do the same thing, and if he does do the same thing we should get out in front of it and get him moved before it's a big problem.

Actually pavs and staals treatments are totally different. Staal very rarely got #1 power play minutes even with 1 or more of crosby and malkin injured.

Pavs no matter who is healthy or hurt still gets #1 power play minutes.

I didn't say they were treated the same, I said people had homer glasses on about Staal too and made a ton of excuses (just like we do) why he would stay. In the end, he didn't, and if Wilson feels like there is even a chance that is going to happen with Pav's you trade him for as much as you can get as soon as you can.

I have a hard time seeing Pavs going anywhere without a Staal like return or Pavs wanting more than 5mil.
Guy loves SJ, has all the tools(minus speed) and has a habit of scoring big goals. Can play C or W. His PO #'s are pretty good-

74g played-24 goals & 26 assists

There's a reason some call him Joe$$

Logan Couture's contract extension includes a "very limited" no-trade clause, I'm told. #SJSharks

Limited no-trade language in Couture's new deal with #SJSharks kicks in 2016, gives him some control of where he does or doesn't go.

Damnit Wilson only 5 years should have been 8 or 10. Glad to have Couture for a while.

For as much grief as DW takes here, I am glad he is not handing out crazy deals like 25 other GMs are(Burish was last summer)..He has constructed a good system here and stays the course. Is Giroux really worth 8mil+/8yrs??? 7yrs/36+mil for Clarkson?

Looking around the league at some of the other deals that went down, we really got a good value with this signing.

A terribly stupid GM with two cup appearances and one cup win in the same length as DW

Rutherford took a chance on Semin when no one else would. He turned a 2nd rounder and an AHLer (McBain) into a very underrated top-4 two-way defenseman (Sekera). He drafted BPA at 5 instead of taking a defenseman way too high or trading the pick for an underwhelming offer. Sure, he's made some over payments, but I think he's at least an average GM and possibly above average.

He got a 2nd round pick out of Niclas Wallin. I don't care that he gave up a 5th to do it as well. He is a genius of the highest order to pull that off. lol

Keep in mind that Rutherford, at least in the past, has also very much constrained by a budget. It is difficult to fault him for some of those moves. The team he is managing isn't located in a great place, doesn't have a lot of money, and doesn't have much hockey history. That makes it even tougher for him to sign and retain players.

Maximum length of contracts is 8 years with the new CBA but yeah it would have been nice to lock up Couture for 6 yrs+.

Rutherford is legit, but what's wrong with Raleigh, NC?
