Mikko Kalteva playing jrs or elite?

Is Mikko Kaltava making the jump up to the elite this year or is he staying down with the junior club? A link to his team page would be appreciated so I can track him as well.

Thank you.

Mikko Kalteva will probably play most of the season with the SM-liiga team of Jokerit, but could be spending some time in the junior team, too. He's been out with a dislocated knee, but should return to the lineup soonish.

The official site of Jokerit has traditionally been the worst possible source of information. If you just need stats, you can find them on the official site of SM-liiga.

Thanks a ton eh. And just for the record if anyone is curious Mikko Viitanen is looking very, very solid at Avalanche rookie camp.

Doesn't look like he's made the jump to the big club as of yet. Can you tell me how to reach the same information for the junior team?

Thanks again.

Mikko Kalteva plays at least two games in U20-team against 1st-division (Mestis) teams.

Here is an article about this U20-tem. (Sorry, it's in finnish)

Apparently he's still injured. His name isn't listed on the roster of the junior A team (http://www.jokerit.com/junnut/0304/ajunnut.html) at all, which indicates that he'll spend the whole season with the "big club". He has been named to the U20 Team Finland squad which will play K-Vantaa on Sunday and Salamat on Monday (both Mestis (tier 2) teams), we'll see...

Ok, great. Here's to hoping he plays this weekend then.

Kalteva still injured? He's got nothing for stats so far this year.

Time to update this thread as well: Mikko finally made his SM-liiga debut this week. He was already in the lineup on Tuesday, but watched the whole game from the bench. Yesterday (with even more players out with the flue/fever/virus) he finally got to play in SM-liiga.

He'd spent the whole season until now in the juniors, mainly because after he got injured, Sami Lepistö played so well. He still managed to get selected to the WJC.

Thanks eh. Looks like he's had a reliable showing for the WJC so far.

Kalteva was the only Avalanche prospect in the tournament. It sounds like he was solid, if not quiet. Can anyone give me a scouting report on how he performed? I'm particularly interested in his skating and defensive positioning instincts. If there's available video out there I'd like to hear about that as well.

Thank you!

His skating needs a lot of improvement, but despite that he made very few mistakes in his own end - apart from the very last game. His decision-making and positioning were good but he's no threat at all scoring wise. He didn't strike me as a physical player, especially considering his 6'4 frame.

That's about all I can remember, and it should be mentioned that I had never seen Kalteva before the tournament.

His skating definately needs work, in the higher paced games he was often a step behind. On the other hand, he's positioning has to be good because I don't remember any situations where his lack of footspeed would've caused any serious trouble. He needs to be more physical. Just like the whole team, he was clearly fatigued in the final two games.

All in all it was a very good tournament for him. He was third of Finnish players in plus-minus, second among defensemen.

Thanks fellas. Perhaps he's still getting back to game shape from his injury? Kalteva had relatively strong offensive numbers in juniors, so stats do not tell the whole story obviously. Finnish defensemen aren't generally known for being soft so I hope the physical aspect of his game improves with more time with the Elites.

Thanks again.

The kid played a stay-at-home role in WJC and that limited his chances to go out and bang bodies. I have no problem with his toughness, and I breathed lot easier when he and Lepistö were on ice.
