Colorado - Chicago

Stastny (some salary retained)
2013 62nd overall

Bolland
2013 29th/30th overall

Both centers have one year left on their deals. Chicago gets a second line center and Avs a third line center and a chance to see if it's a good fit long term.

I think this is a fair deal for both teams.

Chicago will get to have 2 incredible lines.

Saad - Toews - Kane
Sharp - Stastny - Hossa

Colorado will still have 3 good centres in Duchene, O'Reilly and Bolland as well as getting an extra 1st.

I think Chicago would need to add a bit more. Either that or the pick they are getting would be lower.

Value is close though.

These teams will be in the same division next year. Don't see any trade happening between them. Especially a potentially major one like is outlined here.

Don't like to even think about how good would Paulie look on the line with Kane and Sharp playing for coach Q.

Not saying the value is that far off but I think the Avs could do a little better, regardless if the Avs are trading Stastny then it should be because they just drafted MacKinnon/Barkov/Drouin and are looking for help on defense...

If Avs are conceding they aren't contending next year then it makes sense

But the move into Hawks division makes this trade hard to see

Still would love

Saad-Toews-Kane
Sharp-Stastny-Hossa

I honestly wouldn't mind this just to quiet all the Stastny haters on this board. However, it's going to haunt the Avs in the near future. I'd rather deal with a team that isn't in our division.

Rather not trade in division, and if we draft a forward, Stastny should be moved for a top 4 defensman.

This is one of the most overblown things in sports. The Avs aren't going to be beating the Blackhawks any time soon, so what does it matter? If they think the trade makes them better they do it.

Especially with the new alignment, there are just too many teams in your division to not make deals with them, plus the impact of any one team in your division is watered down by their greater number.

The value is fair. i dont see them being in the same division that much of an issue. The bigger thing in trading Stasny is what does that say in how Colorado will draft and/or try to keep ROR.

the other issue is how much salary is retained.

Well... we did beat them during their streak recently

I'd sooner send him to STL than CHI, he would make them so good playing those linemates it's almost unfair.

I'd definitely expect better than this deal, Bolland is a good player but I don't see the point in paying him 4.5mil or more to center the third line if we're moving Staz because we've drafted Mack or Barkov.

Why trade in the division if you don't have to? The trade will be scrutinized if the Avs pick doesn't pan and out Bolland bolts. Also, theres so much parity in this league it just takes a new coach, one FA signing, etc. and you're closer. Who would've thought that the Islanders would've pushed the stacked Penguins team to game 7 this year?

Probably a fair swap from an asset standpoint, but from a strictly Colorado perspective, that team really needs a defenseman, and Stastny is a pretty good chip to trade. Rather than trading center-for-center, does it not make more sense for Colorado to get a defenseman for Stastny? Particularly if they draft a center at #1?

If the Avs are retaining salary I want more then basically Bolland and a late 1st coming back.

The only real knock on Stastny right now is that he's a 50-60 point 2nd Line center that's overpaid by around 1.5M.

If were retaining salary then Stastny becomes a very attractive piece to many teams especially when you consider that wherever he's traded to he would be put in a much more offensive role, and likely becomes a 65-70 point player again, which at around 5M is a bargain.

I would propose Stastny at 5.1M for Hjalmarsson + 2013 2nd(2014 if they don't have a 2013 2nd).

LOL, "Avs aren't beating the Blackhawks anytime soon"

Wait, who ended that big point streak thing they had going this year that was all historic and stuff?

Anyways I'd rather get Hjalmarsson, like Pierce said, instead of Bolland

Stastny won't return Hjalmarsson. Unrealistic proposals (both ways) and the ensuing hilarity is the reason most Avs threads in this forum end up closed.

Stastny at 5M should most definitely return a Hjalmarsson.

Otherwise why would we move him? Hjalmarsson is not a Top pairing Dman. He's a good #3 which is what we would want if we were to trade Stastny.

Any less and there no point for us to move him, we'd be better off keeping him.

Rather wait till he's a UFA and sign him to a cheaper deal and not give up assets like our 1st.

Easy no. If we trade Stastny we aren't going to want another center.

Also i'm not really impressed with Bolland. All he's done is have a good playoff run when the Hawks won the cup and a good series against Vancouver the year after and hasn't done anything since.

Then there is the fact we will be in the same division next year..

If Salary is retained I think this would be great for the Hawks.

Dont be so sure... If we draft a center we would have 4 really good centers. Duchene (who isnt going anywhere), Staz, ROR, and our new draftee lets say Mack.

If we trade Staz and attempt to get a top 4 dman for him...that leaves us with Duchene , Mack, and ROR. ROR is going to make 6.5 mil this year and that is far too much for a 3rd line center, but Mack is defensively inferior to ROR and thus ROR gets the defensive zone starts and becomes more of a 3rd line c instead of a 2a, 2b situation.

Trading Staz for a defensively sound center and then trading ROR for a dman would probably be the way to go as ROR would bring back a better return defensively.

Just a possible solution to gaining ground on our defense since we dont seem to be taking Jones.

The Avs aren't going to trade Stastny for another center. Mainly because from the sounds of it we are either going to end up with Barkov or MacKinnon in the draft. Acquiring Bolland would still create a logjam that we currently have.

The value isn't bad just doesn't make sense from Colorado's standpoint.

Change it to like Saad and Chicago's 3rd for Stastny and Colorado's 5th and I'd be all over it.

It would make sense for Avs.

Avs are trying to run three scoring lines without the wingers to do it or the ice time to go around. That leads to one guy having to play a shutdown role with Jones as his winger.

Switching to a top two lines/bottom two lines setup would be better in the long run for the team since you get more clearly defined roles.

Of course trading Stastny for a center with a more clearly defined role isn't the only way to do it. Avs might as well sign Boyd Gordon in free agency and trade Stastny + superfluous defender for a better defender and it would accomplish the same thing.

That Avs might pick a center in the draft is irrelevant since he won't be able to do much as a center for a couple of years anyway. He won't make anyone expendable. He most likely will have to play wing for a while.
