Jon Blum and other cheap fixes

Here is an article I wrote about the Flyers potentially targeting Jon Blum of the Nashville Predators:

http://thehockeywriters.com/jonathon...flyers-target/

I believe it's time the Flyers stop trying to nab the high-profile players (Yandle/Ryan) and look for fixes that won't deplete our young players, be cap-friendly, and help down the road.

Who are some other players of Blum's ilk that you would like to see suit up in the Orange and Black?

McBain or Ryan Murphy from Carolina. Only reason I say Murphy is due to recent comments by the GM.

What do you think it would cost to get Blum?

So Blum has fallen pretty hard it looks like? I remember people were clamoring about trading for him and saying he was one of the next big defensemen.

As far as possibly practical options go Zubrus would be up there. Guy is everything you want in a guy who's not counted on as a scorer. Ryan Murphy as far as prospects go.

If only we could clone a healthy Laperriere.

3rd. My plan would be to trade Mesz for a 3rd, free up cap space, then trade the 3rd for Blum. That's in a perfect world, and we all know that Homer doesn't live in one.

Ian Cole out of STL would be another guy I'd highly be interested in.

McBain would likely cost too much and even more so with Ryan Murphy.

If they don't resign Hall I'd like Boyd Gordon to center the 4th line.

He scored 14 points and won 57% of his faceoffs for Phoenix this year.

You would have to think that if he was available and for a 3rd at that there would be a lot of team interested.

I can only think of a few fixes that need to be done.

Gut feeling says one player from the defense will be moved. The question is, will it be Coburn (as part of a bigger deal) or will it be Meszaros (as part of a salary cap cost cutting measure).

A must is getting a new right winger for the third line. I'm willing to give Akeson a shot at the left wing spot with Couturier. A right winger will be needed, so what about going after a guy like Damien Brunner? I can't imagine he's going to break the bank.

As for the fourth line, it's pretty much set with Rinaldo - Laughton - Talbot and Rosehill is the extra forward.

The only other change that I would make is buying out Bryzgalov and then bringing in Tim Thomas. I know that there's questions about Thomas and his political views, but in terms of the locker room, he's an incredibly popular guy who gets along well with his teammates. Guys like David Krejci, Patrice Bergeron, Milan Lucic, Denis Seidenberg, Zdeno Chara and Tukka Rask have mentioned how great Thomas was in the locker room and that's pretty much the leadership group in Boston. Thomas has also said he's willing to come in under a Pro Tryout as well, so he could probably sign for even cheaper than what many believe he might sign for.

So, going forward, you've got a team that would look like:

Hartnell - Giroux - Voracek
Simmonds - Schenn - Read
Akeson - Couturier - Brunner
Rinaldo - Laughton - Talbot
Rosehill

Timonen - Coburn
Streit - Schenn
Grossmann - Gustafsson

Thomas
Mason

It's not a bad lineup. I think you're looking at three solid forward lines and a capable defense (if Coburn ever gets his head straightened on).

That would be the best way to use him. Lavi knows that as Larose already won a cup with him as was coach.

If Laughton doesn't make the team, which I can't see happening as I read about him he should, Boyd Gordon would be the best 4th line C for is at that price point.

I'd lol. Blum was taken with the first Nashville sent us for forsberg then got back for the rights to timonen and hartnell. I'd take a cheap look at him sure.

If we did get Blum for a pick that would leave us with 9 defenseman. Meszaros is probably gone anyway. Would we trade/waive gervais make Blum the 7th defenseman? Or do you move meszaros and someone else to get him into the top 6?

Edit: I'm not that familiar with blums game so what are his strengths an weaknesses? His stats don't look like he is an offensive guy. Is he more of a stay at home defender?

Blum is an offensive defenseman. He can run the power play and he's got great vision. He's not a physical guy at all and I think that's where the frustration with Blum usually lies. He's added some weight and muscle to his frame and he's become a better positional player, but he'll never be a physical guy. He's more prone to poke check and get his stick in the lane rather than step in front of someone. It's a big reason why he drives Trotz mad. With that being said, he's been a leader everywhere he's been, so he's real good in a locker room. I'd love to see the Flyers give him a chance, but with Timonen, Streit and Gustafsson in the lineup, where do you play Blum?

Kimmo - Schenn
Streit - Coburn
Gross - Blum
Gus?

Sub Gus and Blum in for one another? Not a bad problem to have to say the least. He wouldn't cost that much based on his current/past contracts.
