Interesting. "Dinks gone off half crocked, but never half cocked". There was indeed a "code" back in the day, that Reporters wouldnt always print embarrassing or comprising storys that they may have either witnessed themselves or been privy to. Most of the best like Carroll having a fondness for a drink, well lubricated, lit. All kinds of hysterical stories from the older generations of reporters & pundits, through the 60's & 70's. Toronto as well having its "crew" if you will, the Globe, Star and earlier the Telegram's sports beat & Leaf/NHL reporters getting up to all manner of trouble, many travelling with the teams, arriving in Chicago or wherever intoxicated at 6am on a Sunday morning, watching another game that night emaciated, filing a report by midnight full on inebriated, not remembering what theyd even written until seeing it the next day, fortunate they had understanding editors who cleaned a lot of it up.
