How is this built from the net out?

That defense consists of a #1Dman, a top 4 dman and 4 bottom pairing Dmen.

They've been discussed regularly as trade partners, especially with the 5th overall pick. Both Edm @ 7 and Carolina @ 5 overall can use D badly - the problem is that the same UFAs and free wallet trades we want are the same they also want, so they are less willing to move assets we want.

But regardless this team needs to start building from the draft and acquiring assets. There is no use in constantly trading picks/prospects for a player just to win now.

I think this would be an ideal yet realistic off season for us:

-Tyler Bozak, C Mac walk via free agency. Leafs resign all other RFAs and UFAs.

-Leafs grab Clarkson off free agency.

-We trade a 5th round selection for D Andrej Meszaros.

-Try to trade Grabovski if not keep him.

-Gardiner gets traded to Philadelphia for Sean Couturier.

-We get Bernier+4th in exchange for Frattin and a 2nd round pick.

-Scrivens then gets traded to Edmonton for a 2nd.

-We take on DiPietro's contract along with Griffin Reinhart for Liles.

-Amesty buyouts on DiPietro and Komisarek.

-Trade pick #21 down for picks 26 an 45.

-Leafs grab Morgan Klimchuk at 26, Tristan Jarry at 45, and Justin Bailey at 56.

JVR - Couturier - Kessel
Lupul - Kadri - Clarkson
Kulemin - Grabo - McClement
Orr - Colborne - D'Amigo
Depth: McLaren

Phaneuf - Gunnarsson
Franson - Fraser
Holzer - Meszaros
Depth: Blacker, Kostka

Reimer
Bernier
Are we aiming for a 2014 lottery pick there?

Couturier isn't this big offensive stud people make him out to be. He's going to be another clone of Jordan Staal. I don't know about some of the people on these boards but I really have 0 interest in having Jordan Staal type be my team's #1 center..specially when I'm giving up Gardiner to acquire him, that's just stupidity.

What's going to happen with Fraser. After someone posted that x-ray shot I'm worried about his future!

I think it's safe to assume that Frattin will not be a Leaf come September. He seems like the perfect mix of desirable to other teams but expendable to the Leafs. If the rumors are true about Bernier, Stastny, etc. I think it's Frattin going the other way. I actually like him and I think we need his physicality in the top 9 now that Komarov isn't returning, but I don't see the Leafs parting with any of the top 6 or top 4 to bring in another piece via trade.

It seems like a lot of Leafs fans are torn between him, as far as his NHL upside. I find it concerning that he's already 25 and not established in the NHL, but his skill, speed and physicality are undeniable. I think the only way he succeeds is if he's traded to a really good team and he is given an opportunity with top linemates. The chance of that happening is slim I guess, so maybe trading him is the right move if Nonis can get a solid upgrade for him.

I know frattin seems on the block but I think he's a valuable asset unless we get someone we've needed badly. I think there are players that we don't expect to be, in play more than frattin IMHO. Frattin seems like a desirable piece and what not but I think it would be for a package.

You have to also remember it was a shortened season, in which he started to tail off towards the end.

I think realistically, he takes 3-3.25M on a two year deal
I don't think the club would have any interest in signing him for just two seasons. They will pay more to buy into his FA years. Couture has scored at a 60pt pace for the last 3 years and is a $6 million dollar man now. Kadri was at a 60pt pace this season. I think he is looking at a long term deal, if they feel this was just the beginning.

Doesn't matter. Couture has done it for 3 years, while Kadri has done it for 48 games! You won't be able to sign him for more then 3 years under 4M.

No... I was going to see if I could get put in the draft, I know I'll be 21 by then but I'm hoping they allow me to enter the draft as I'm sure I'll be a very valuable and sought-after player... even though I have never played hockey in my life!

Honestly, if I'm rooting for the team that finishes last that year and they lose the lottery... I might go full Vancouver

If we are really building from the net out, would you not expect a better GAA for the team. In fact, for some reason, I see the team is quite offensively loaded and lacking in the defensive aspect of the game.

Hopefully our prospects pan out. At least 2-3 of Rielly, Finn, Percy, Blacker, Granberg should start making the big club in the next couple years. We badly need to shore up the backend.

Then a crazy flying monkey assinates the evil dictator slave owner. It would be the biggest wave of happiness ever. Hell we deserve it after that.... Lose.

Jvr - kadri - kessel
Lupul - grabovski - frattin
Kulemin - colborne - ashton
D'AMIGO - Mcclement - orr

Phanuef - franson
Gardiner - gunnarsson
Liles - fraser

Rather that than over paying a ufa, or trading youth in a lopsided deal. I think gardiner is movable, but it has to be for someone who can impact in the coming or next season after.
.
I cant wait for camp to see what some of our vet prospects can bring to the table, and if they can help improve this team at an affordable rate.

Think possible frattin for bernier rumors are floating around because management believes that ashton can fill 3rd line duties... and not just clarkson signing in hand ?

Why do people keep pairing Franson with Phaneuf and Gunnar with Gardiner? In the playoffs Gardiner-Franson were great as a pairing and in the past Phaneuf-Gunnar have been great as well... Phaneuf-Franson would be putting 2 slow dmen on the same pairing and not be as well rounded as Phaneuf-Gunnar.

Hopefully Ranger decides to sign a contract with the Leafs and I believe that one of Percy, Rielly, or Blacker make the Leafs for the bottom pairing giving us a Defence that looks like this:

Phaneuf - Gunnar
Gardiner - Franson
Ranger - Rielly/Blacker/Percy
Fraser

If management has faith in Ranger perhaps a trade around Gunnarson for Stastny could be viable. Another option is one of the UFA or RFA Dmen... If we could get somebody that's serviceable on the first pairing (even if it's a below average 1st pairing) while Rielly/Gardiner/Percy/Finn develop while adding Stastny I believe our team would be much better.
