First, no, Hackett and Kuemper are not proven. Neither is Bernier. But Hackett and Kuemper were Wild-controlled assets i.e. we are not giving up anything to keep them and see what happens. Bernier would cost quite a bit to acquire, especially if Zucker is involved.

Second, you already have a starter with Backstrom. Unless he truly wants to chase money, why not get him for another couple years at $3-4m? Yes it costs $1-2m more this year, but Bernier is going to want at least that much money next year. You're getting one year of cost savings at the expense of potentially some very important prospects.

Third, the team is not anything more than a borderline playoff team this year, and Bernier doesn't fix that. Goaltending is not the issue with this team. It is defensive depth, top scoring, and scoring depth. Moving guys like Zucker and even to a lesser extent Clutterbuck makes things worse, not better. Take the best goalie in the world, whoever you think that is, even Henrik Lundqvist would not make this team a contender.

Giving up lots of assets and rolling the dice to try and get a slight upgrade in goaltending just isn't smart IMO. Low marginal improvement. The economist in me says you upgrade at the positions of greatest need. Removing a 20+ goal scorer in either Zucker or say Setoguchi or a 15-goal guy in Clutterbuck to save maybe an extra 5-10 goals per year is bad math.

IMO you stick with Kuemper and Gustafsson to see what happens, throw $3-4m at Backstrom (or else $2-3m at another option in UFA), and roll with him and Harding. You have solid starting goaltending and you can use your assets to try to improve your defensive or offensive depth. Maybe you buy out Gilbert and take a run at Briere on a 1-2 year deal to bolster your offense.
Well said Jarick. I couldn't agree more.

Nowhere near as much return, but we didn't have those kinds of players in the system.

The Wild continues to talk contract with Niklas Backstrom. He can become a free agent July 5, but with salary-cap space limited (about $6 million to spend this summer barring trades and potential buyouts), the Wild has also been investigating trade options.

according to Russos latest rant blog

I hope we sign Bäckström instead of trading for MAF. MAF could be better, but I'm not willing to give up any important assets for him.

IMO Toronto made out very well in the Bernier trade, going forward they will have a great goalie tandem - if they don't trade Reimer that is

Agreed. I am glad that GMCF did not offer what he was being asked...

I don't quite understand what Toronto is doing going after Bernier...Reimer was very good in the playoffs (game 7 collapse in Boston was not his fault).

It's not really the best place in this thread to talk about it, but apparently the ownership pushed for it even if the GM/staff wanted to stick with Reimer. I've read that a few times over on the trade board.

But they're going to get some pretty good competition between Reimer and Bernier now. Good for them I suppose.

I'm so relieved by that thought that Zucker stays.. Would have been brutal to lose him.. The thought of getting Fleury is kinda interesting. But only if he comes cheap..

How would people feel about targeting Lindback? Had kind of a rough year with a terrible defense in front of him but they traded for Bishop to be their #1, so Lindback might be had for cheaper than Tampa paid to acquire him.

I'd also love to inquire about Halak.

And I'm probably one of the few that isn't against getting Fleury...but obviously not paying a lot to inquire him (Heatley or Gilbert going the other way).

Some rumblings Phaneuf may be in play. Nonis says he will trade just about anyone, but says no one has called on the captain...yet. #TSN
Heatley(7.5) for Phaneuf(6.5)

Both expire after this season. We would likely have to add a pick or something, but would you guys be interested?

No goalie stops a shot when Chara is standing in front of you.

If a team is willing to take on MAF's salary, they wont be giving up much to get him. He doesnt have great value right now.

Why would Toronto trade their best d-man for an overpayed over the hill forward?

Komarov heads back to KHL so Leafs need another agitator/hitter -> trade a package (I've no clue what kind of package) including Clutterbuck for Phaneuf (if he's really on the block).

Heck no. I stated my case earlier here or in another thread about him. Why overpay the guy(which we might certainly have to do) or sign him to too long of a contract. He's old..has beein going through a million health problems and has been on the decline.

Going after a guy like Bernier made sense IMO.

After looking at what Toronto gave up clearly we wouldn't be in position to give up those assets after the Pominville move. Fletcher and Flahr are smarter than that. I'm just anxious to see what they can do OTHER than resign Backstrom.

I want a goalie who will steal us a playoff series. Now all you Backstrom people tell me..is he that guy right now? I just dont see it. 3 years ago, yes. Now, no way.

Thats a no brainer for the Wild. No way it ever happens though...big difference in value IMO. Phaneufs being much higher than Heater.

None of those options make us go deep in the playoffs IMO. So either Fletcher gets creative or we are hurting in the goalie department.
