Brodin-Kronwall would be an amazing thing to see. It would also piss off every Detroit fan to see Kronwall playing with another Swede who has the vision much like Lidstrom

the pairs idea makes a lot of sense. if i were headed into a tourney with limited practice time I'd probably go with a working pair vs throwing a (relative) youngster in there. it's the safe bet, even if I don't think either in that pair is as good as the individual being left out. no time to dick around if you want the best seeding.

Brodin's probably too young and green to make the Olympic squad, but I can definitely see them regretting not putting him on there, just as Canada did in 2006 when they snubbed Crosby.

We all know how good he is - given a chance to make the team, I don't think his age will be a consideration.

Plus, his mobility will be even more in his favor on the larger ice surface.

But then again, this is Sweden we are talking about. The motherland of mobile defensemen

If Brodin doesn't make the team, I don't think its really a disappointment considering the talent the team has.

Chemistry is always important and especially when going into the Olympics where you have no time to train / play together before. Even if you consider Brodin better than Ericsson, Hjalmarsson and Oduya you have to see the point of having a defense pair who already know each other well. For example I would take Hedman ahead of Oduya, Hjalmarsson and Ericsson individually but I think that SWE will prefer taking the a ready pair ahead of Hedman.

We'll see what happens and I really hope Brodin makes it, but Kronwall/Ericsson, Oduya/Hjalmarsson and the fact that Gustafsson was the no 1 D in the WHC makes is much more difficult than some people seem to appreciate. Brodin has an outside chance at making the team if he manages to keep up, or improve, his level of play from this year during the fall.

If Sweden puts together an Olympic team with Ericsson, Oduya, and even Hjalmarsson getting regular minutes? they will deserve the ass kickings that they are sure to receive. Chemistry is nice but talent is still much more important.

Brodin might not make the team, but he wont lose a spot to guys like Ericsson or Oduya.

This I agree with. I think ultimately he'll be the 7th or 8th guy.

Agreed..but those are vets and established players there. Brodin is the better player yes but as far as making the team I'm not 100percent convinced he beats out those players.

That's the thing. A guy like Hjalmarsson is less spectacular, but fills a need and he might soon have 2 SC-rings at 26. Experienced players like that are important and we've got to have some PK specialists on the team.

Having said that, I really hope Brodin makes the cut, at least as a 7th D.

In spite of the "love" of Bacon here, I remember people second guessing he'd make the Wild last off-season. As ridiculous as it seems in retrospect, yes, check the threads. There were doubts he would be better than Prosser, Kampfer, or Falk.

Don't underestimate this kid.

Same goes for Dumba - if he can't make the Wild next season, he is a bust.

He will be 19 in July. Are we going to deny talent based on age?

I know we have a lot of defensemen signed for next season, but if he is better, which I would hope he is (Prosser, Stoner, Falk, etc. really?), why not give him the spot?

If N. Schultz can make it as a 19 year old, why not Dumba?

The point is that while he is probably better right now...it isn't a better fit for him or us to play 3rd pairing. Its why would you have him make the team to get 13minutes a night playing 3rd pairing and no PP time.

Its much smarter to let the kid grow as a player in a league he can dominate..if he's ready by all means give him a top 4 spot but if not let him develop.

We don't want to ruin the kid you can't just throw prospects on the team to play 13 minutes(or 10 as a forward) and hope it works out. Fletcher and Co. have stated many times they won't do this.

If you look at the teams that are doing well in the playoffs, they have good depth on defense. I would want the best players available to me on defense, and if one of them is 19, and he plays on a 3rd pairing, so be it.

When you play on the road, and the other team has last change, having a good "3rd pairing" is pretty important. Having a better 3rd pair also takes pressure off your top pair. Do you really want Suter playing 30 minutes a night? That is not only a statement about how good Suter is, but how weak the rest of the D is.

That is all assuming he would be 3rd pairing - he might be 2nd for all we know.

Anyone here thing that maybe it might be sarcasm? Dumba doesn't have what Brodin had which was amazing defensive awareness. Thats what allowed Brodin to excel at a young age, he wasn't a liability but an asset. i can see Dumba make the team and get some sheltered miutes for a while as he grows into NHL next year tho. I mean its not like his competition is stiff.

Brodin is not yet a top 2 defenceman. I know we all love Brodin and I am a big suporter of his but his 11pts in 45 games is NOT a top2 defenceman point total. If and when he puts up 30-40 points in the upcoming seasons then yes he´s a top 2 defenceman. He will eventually get there but right now he´s not, even if he can play top 2 minutes.

And how did that turn out? Schultz became terrified to play the puck, all his puck movement ability and offensive abilities were shut down.

Dumba didn't exactly dominate juniors this year. He struggled quite a bit. Let him play a full year against kids and try and make the WJC before trying to play against NHL'ers. Give him a long training camp and a couple preseason games, maybe put keep him up for a couple games to start the year, but let him develop.

Defensively I think he's better than some teams' #1 guys. Offensively he'll have to keep improving.
