Post-xmas proposal if Colorado is fading in the standings

To MTL:
Joe Sakic ($5.75M)*

To COL:
Sheldon Souray ($2.318M)*
Alexander Perezhogin ($0.627M)*
Andrei Kostitsyn (minor leaguer)

*cap hit in brackets

Montreal's lines would then look like this...

Samsonov-Sakic-Kovalev
Higgins-Koivu-Ryder
Plekanec-Bonk-Johnson
Murray-Begin-Downey
Latendresse

Markov-Komisarek
Niinimaa-Rivet
Bouillon-Dandenault
Streit

Huet
Aebischer

This works financially since Montreal has $3.001M in cap space left. Minus Souray and Perezhogin, plus Sakic equals $43.804M.

You may be asking, why would Colorado want Souray, he's a UFA at the end of the season? Well, to make this deal work, the Avalanche would have to take some salary, but since he is a UFA, it's a temporary cap hit that won't affect them beyond this season. Rumour has it he wants to be in the west to be with family so maybe he'll even re-sign with them. And if you consider that Souray probably won't be re-signed by Montreal at the end of this season anyway, all we're giving up for Sakic is a 3rd liner and a minor leaguer (granted they both have very good potential).

Sakic is also a UFA so rather then the Avalanche losing him for nothing... Montreal and Colorado have a history of being trading partners. If the Canadiens have a legitimate chance of making the playoffs, they might just pull the trigger on something like this to give themselves one helluva post-season line-up.

Thoughts?

I would jump on that, even though losing a D like Souray would hurt alot.

No. Our future depends on Kots and Perez. I would not shoot montreal in the foot for years to come for Sakic for the playoffs. Plus we also lose a good defenceman that we cannot spare.

hahaha, Sakic? Wow, I mean, I love the guy..... but I don't see them trading him. Especially for that package. He'll probably finish his career w/ the same org

Too good to be true.

And Colorado would never trade Sakic.

Exactly. It's a dream but you'd have to think that with those lines, we'd be a very big contender.

That would never be enough for Sakic.

There's no way I would trade that much of our future to get Sakic it's just too much...

If they are out of the playoffs come trade deadline and don't look like they have a chance to get in, why wouldn't they? He's a UFA this year, they could lose him for nothing.

I can't see Sakic signing with another team, it just wouldn't be right IMO.

Well he's signed with another team in the past...

For Sakic, it's about money. If the money is good somewhere else, he will go there.

He signed with the Rangers because they offered more money than the Avs, and the Avs matched. As I said, Sakic is all about the money. He goes where the money is.

"But this isn't 1997, when Sakic signed a three-year, $21 million offer sheet with the Rangers to provoke the Avalanche into getting moving with negotiations. Sakic pronounced his love for the team and its fans last summer, when he said he wanted to finish his career in Denver."

He's a UFA? So why would we offer so much then? He could be had for something very small, 1 prospect.

correct, it was one of the few ridiculous offers made to the RFA.

And by the way... Sakic, will resign with Colorado at the end of the season... i'm 100% sure.

I wouldn't give that much youth for Sakic ... He could get us closer to a cup, but if we don't win it, we'll have sacrificed 2 of our top prospects for what ? I'd consider Kost + Souray ... But never 2 prospects ... Sakic isn't 26 years old ...

Unless they deal him out... Personally I believe that both sides are loyal and he'll finish in Colo.

Yeah, it was a while ago in 1997. It's normal you wouldn't remember. http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/...p?player=11437
