if oilers have deal for gagner then its win win, either he takes lower offer or gets moved... who knows if he's even being shopped though...
or they could be negotiating in good faith and the Oilers want to keep him, especially at a position where the Oilers are very weak.

He's played for us through a ton of brutal seasons without loosing his commitment to improving.

Nobody should have been shocked over what he accomplished last year. More like we should've been a little surprised that it took him that long to have a season like that. I think it would be fair to suggest that he was rushed into the NHL.

He was believed to have a very high level of potential when he was drafted. Now that he's fulfilling his potential we'd be nuts to not try to lock him up for 5+ years. I'd be so excited if we managed to sign him for 5M per year.
I agree. I am a Gags fan. I'd prefer him locked up under 5M... I don't think his 48gm breakout season justifies $5M+, especially if... like I expect... he wants to stick around as a part of this young core.

All of that said... I do not put it past MacT to deal him to Chicago for some proven, gritty depth (not sure what the return would be) and then move up in the draft to ensure one of the top 4 centers... all of whom have "size" on their side.

I agree he would be crazy to fill in #2C with question marks... which is why I'd expect one of the confirmed trades to be with Carolina for 5th overall. I doubt that Stu and MacT see Monahan or Barkov as question marks.

The real difficulty will be in filling out #3 & 4C with solid vet shutdown guys. We will absolutely need that if both Gags and Horc are gone.

Again... I expect MacT is on this like a fat-kid-on-a-smartie. (sorry... I know that's off-colour, but it is a funny saying)

There is no way Gagner is moved UNLESS we are getting center help back. The debacle that was when Horcoff, Nuge, Belanger, Lander were hurt (often at the same time)!

If the Hawks, Bolland, right to Bickell, Hanzal? Just cant see it.

There is no way the Oilers find a better 2nd line center than Gagner in the foreseeable future.

5 Million +: Seguin 6@5.75M, Skinner 6@5.75M, O'Reilly 2@5M, Benn 5@5.25M, Zajac 8@5.75M, Neal 6@5M, Grabovski 5@5.5M, Lupul 5@5.25M, E.Kane 5@5.25M.

4 Million or less: Parenteau 4@4M, Williams 4@3.65M, Okposo 5@2.8M, Turris 5@3.5M, Simmons 6@4M, Perron 4@3.8M.

I am predicting 4@4.5 Million for Gagner. A bit higher than we would like but he does have quite a lot of leverage.
Those comparables are all over the map.

I highly doubt he gets anything near $5M to be honest.

I'm really hoping on him signing in the lower-tier range with the Perrons and Turris'. Maybe he's a guy that drinks the kool-aid. I'm sure if he did, he'd get a little more respect around here.

What about Carolina's earlier comments: "willing to move player(s) previously thought to be untouchable".

Has to be Skinner right? And doesn't he have a childhood connection with Hall?

Could this be the rumoured Carolina trade? Are we receiving an Elite-potential young center or scrambled eggs?

Something like: Gagner + 7th + Petry + 2nd for Skinner + 5th + Ruutu

Carolina would look good with a combo of Staal, Gags and Staal down the middle. They deal Ruutu for Petry... 5th for the 7th +2nd knowing that they will get Nicushkin anyway?

I think it will be a bridge contract, similar to what PK did. 2 years @ 3.5 million.

Dammit MacT, don't trade our 2nd line center unless you have another one coming back.

This feels like Gagner is going to go to another team, go on to have an unremarkable, but steady career with 1,000+ games/600 pts and we're going to get back some player that will leave in 2 seasons.

Skinner is an undersized winger. He hasn't played center in the NHL much at all.

Agree that he hasn't played much C in the NHL, but he was drafted as such, no?

And you'd have to agree Skinner's upside is greater than Gags.... you wouldn't do the trade? Ruutu would certainly shore up #3C with some much needed grit. You can draft a solid C and given Skinner the same shot you'd otherwise have given Gags on the 2nd line.

If we trade Petry we are in SERIOUS trouble on defense. Sure he's not as consistent as we'd like but he's still maturing and shows a lot of promise.

Losing Petry would be a serious detriment to the defense.

And pair that with the fact that Carolina values Skinner close to where they value the Staal brothers. I don't think that deal gets done.

I'd be ok with 3 years at 4M.

Anything longer and that should be 3.5.

I sure would, he'd be giving up 1 UFA year. Either he signs for 1 year or at least 3, 2 years is out of the question.

He's turned down 4 x 4.5M, apparently.

You guys are insane if you think he's getting some of these numbers.

He's a year from UFA. He has all the power, he simply says "Arbitration", gets like 4.5M for one year and walks for a ton more next year.

Uh...he has already taken 2 bridge contracts of 2years and one year I wouldn't be surprised if he signs for 2 years at close to five per year. That way he gets paid and the oilers don't take on the risk long term. It's pretty obvious by his contract history they really don't know what they have in Gagner(solid 2nd line center?). Like MacT has said in the past, if you have to ask the question you probably already know the answer. It will be a big mistake to sign him long term at around 5. He has too many warts.

I know for a fact he's friendly with a number of Oilers emplyoees.

Soo... yeah, probably some truth to it.

4+ million for a player who has never scored over 50 points? What was the point of the last lockout..? Looks like nothing has changed.
