If metro north ran trains through Penn I'll be a very happy camper

I guess the effect that the bridges have on the 200 level is similar to what you have in the last few rows of the lower deck at old or new Yankee Stadium, or many other venues. Major tunnel effect in some spots where there is a 2nd tier overhanging the lower level. While I don't like sitting there, the tunnel view is not unique to the renovation/bridges. It's like there is a 3rd tier, it just might affect more rows since it really is just the front of a 3rd tier pushed out over the ice. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't sign off on it if I owned the team and really think it could damage the sports and concert experience at MSG. But, there are lots of arenas and stadiums with stacked tier seating and lots of tunnel view seats in those venues. MSG was a great venue b/c it had none of that. Now it will have to find another way to be a great venue.

From what I've heard, since GCT tracks went points north only, NYP was built for points east, west, south, etc. Now North because of Amtrak's Empire, NEC, MapleLeaf, Vermonter, LSL services. I heard that LIRR will be directing some service to GCT. MN state that they are shooting for 6-10 trains per hour in and out of 34th street. I'm worried about New Jersey Transit's operations. Them and Amtrak share everything that way until Rahway where NJCL breaks off of the NEC. Then the NEC to Trenton and points further are predominantly owned by Amtrak. Congestion is gonna be an issue.

Problem with running Hudson line trains into penn station is that the empire connection from NYP thru the west side of Manhattan doesn't have 3rd rail and that line can only access trains 7-9 or something like that. The other issue is that the LIRR and Metro North use different third rail systems. So once the trains get into the vicinity of Penn Station your going to have all sorts of problems since the two cannot be mixed. So basically a bunch of Amtrak and NJT trains would have to be shifted to the LIRR tracks and Metro North and Amtrak would have to share their empire connection tracks. The New Haven cars can run on both third rail systems along with overhead wires like Amtrak/NJT. I think the most likely thing would be New Haven line trains running over the hell gate line thru queens and into the east river tunnels. Those trains could take slots that could be freed by the LIRR and in the East river tunnels.

islandxtreme26 appears to be our man on the inside of the reno. Got anything for us? Doesn't necessarily have to be pics... plans, obstacles, your opinions, etc. Thanks!

Amtrak and NJT would throw fits if they're moved to predominantly LIRR track. The NJT service to NYP Is all catenary, I'm not sure if all the LIRR used tracks are. I don't even think the Arrow 3 MU's or the PL42 AC units have shoes. LIRR and MN 3rd rail shoes are different in the sense that LIRR's go over and MN's under, IIRC. That's the reason why Amtrak doesn't use GCT anymore. MN M8 and M2 MU's can do both, yes. Depending on what tracks are used, they'd have to be careful of arcing with the catenary wires because HHP8 and ALP46 units are beasts. This probably means the Arrow 3 MU's are going to be retired soon as well

-Train Buff.

Yeah all the tracks in Penn have overhead wire. Now if all tracks can access the North river tunnels I don't know. I really doubt Metro North makes it into Penn anytime soon. Its a logistic nightmare.

You bet. They want to but it seems like it's just a hassle and would cause so much dysfunction.

Has it ever been explained why the bleachers don't go down to ice level? And why they didn't go that route during the renovation?

It's just the geometry of sloping a circle into a rounded rectangle

That geometry only exists at MSG?

I don't know how much of a difference it will make, to be honest. It's still on the fifth floor above a skankerrific train station...
