For ****s sake, some people just can't be satisfied...

I like this deal. I was hoping for around $3,5 mill, expecting 2 years, $4 million per, satisfied with this. Yeah, it might be a year too long, but remember, it's not like Bäcks has been in NHL for ages. I think he can still play those 3 years and be top-20 goalie in the league. And in case his level of play drops dramatically, we have Hards/Kuemps/Gus to back him up.

Ultimately, the ploy with Bernier and Fleury worked. Backstrom didn't get paid as much as he would on the market, he gets to stay in a city that loves him and he doesn't have too much expectations. Win-win.

Backstrom's injury history makes him as much of a question mark as a youngster. The only sure thing with Backs and Hards is that they're soaking up a lot of salary for the next two years.

Young goalies can't be afforded the chance at earning a job as long as Harding is still around. Like it or not, that's reality of the crummy hand Harding and this team was dealt.

Team decided it was best to stick with what they know in Backstrom. Yes we can mull over it being a year too long or a few $100ks over a desired number but at the end of the day the less turnover that this roster experiences given the last few years the better.

good deal. backstrom was solid this year. we just need to continue to be good defensively in front of him, and let him get a break once and a while. I think with the extended season this year we should be able to play hards/kemp more often

Which is a very logical point to make. Harding is UFA next year and I'm pretty sure he won't be resigned.

More than I would have liked, but that's more because the Harding situation is the elephant in the room.

Too long and a bit too expensive.

And remember.. Backs was the reason I started to follow Wild.
The truth is, he's an oldish and slowish man nowadays.

But I can live with it.

One year too much but cap hit better than expected. I give it solid 8/10.

Solid contract, was expecting 2/9 so 3/10 isn't bad having the extra year. Looks like it will be the same tandem for another year, though Kuemper/Gustafsson will probably get looks given the history of time missed by Backs/Harding. Decisions will have to be made in 14/15 though, waivers for Kuemper with both Backs/Harding having contracts, doubt either would garner much trade interest barring a solid, healthy season.

I like this signing. Worst case scenario, in 1.5 to 2 years, we'll have a somewhat expensive backup goalie to mentor our promising, young ones. He'll be coming off the books shortly thereafter. He gets to retire a Wild. The three years worked in our favor, IMO. A one to two year deal would've cost us a $4+ cap hit I'd bet.

Another important thing with this contract, unlike his previous one, is that there appears to be no NTC/NMC, so if one of Kuemper/Gustafsson appears ready to take over in a couple years, then Backstrom can be traded rather easily. A $3.42 (not 3.24, change the title) cap hit is certainly more appealing to an interested team than a $6 million cap hit.

Cost per year is fine.

Length of contract is at least one year too long.

Thats exactly the problem though..your hoping for a top 20 goalie in the league?? Ouch. Im fine with the deal..a year too long probably but Fletchers hands were tied unless he wanted to pay big bucks for Bernier, Fleury, Luongo etc via trade or Mike Smith via UFA.

It just sucks to think that unless Harding, Gustafsson or Kuemper find a way to be stellar in the next three years(which isn't entirely impossible don't get me wrong) then we are stuck with a below average starting goalie in this league for 3 years paying him over 3 million dollars a year.

I don't know... He's on the brink of top-20 right know, and we knew that last year's schedule was especially hard for older players and goalies.

Russo seems to think that they won't because of the PR issue. That kind of ties their hands in a massive way.
